Migration to 8.0

WORD UP, BROTHER!

We also have been live with 8.0 since May this year and it has been a
difficult slope, but the past few months, Epicor has really shined with
help. However, that still does not negate my reaction that 8.0 is beta
due to the fixes that are required with each patch.

Hi De Anna,

We are new to the Epicor Family. We bought the software in March with an
intention to go live September 1. We have pushed the go live to January
1. I would be very cautious. It is my belief and this was just
confirmed, that 8.0 was an ALPHA release, NOT a BETA release. I have
said all along that we were the BETA testors, and it was finally
confirmed. I believe they were 8-12 months too soon in the release of
this product. January 1st 2006 would have been a better date for them
to have delivered this product. Most of the training was not available
until this quarter. And I believe they have several more classes to go
and won't be available until end of this quarter and into next.

I would be very CAUTIOUS about migrating to 8.0. Don't get me wrong, I
believe the promised functionality is heads and tails above their
competitors but it does not work like they promised. They have done a
lot of work since their release, but each week they have a patch or
release or hot fix that needs to be installed.

We have been asking since May for back office administration guide.
Still have not received it. Instructions received from support are
typically wrong 90% of the time and not complete. Help screens in the
8.0 software is very clunky and not complete. There are no step by step
instructions. You will see a lot of Coming Soon References when trying
to navigate through help.

8.0 is very different from 6.1. You better have a good understanding of
MOM, BOO, BOM, Resource Groups, Resources, etc.

I would treat this as a new install, even though you were a 6.1 user.

Have a great weekend!

Subject: [Vantage] Migration to 8.0

Hello Everyone!

It has been a long time since I have posted to this group. We have
used Vantage since 1997. I have always completed the upgrades. We
don't do anything fancy with Vantage, no custom programming, we do
not use multi-sites or connect/web.

I have been annoyed by how hard it has been to get Epicor to send me
8.0. I signed the waiver and it should be coming. They are really
pushing hard for their installation services.

How hard is it it upgrade from 6.0/6.1 to 8.0? Does anyone have a
corrected copy of the installation instructions? I have the 8.0
upgrade CD provided by Epicor.

What support do you actually get from Epicor with your annual
maintenance. I have always had to call support when I have migrated.

How different is the 8.0 application? I have found with a lot of
the upgrades that main benefit of upgrading is the new modules that
you can purchase. If I do not plan on purchasing any new modules,
is there a benefit to upgrade?

I was very surprised by the client requirements. Do you know if the
data collection terminals have the same requirements?

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Pardon me for saying so but from the above statement it appears to me you have not investigated 8.0 very much or seen it in action. My apologies if this is not the case. I am viewing 8.0 as the equivalent of implementing an entirely new ERP system - with the exception that most or all of the current functionality is in there and many screen are sort of similar - also the data will move over. Beyond that 8.0 is Vantage re-written from the ground up using entirely new technology and service oriented architecture (SOA with Progress OpenEdge and .Net). This part explains the changes in hardware requirements. I suspect for DC we will use Terminal Services from a centralized server (or two) on thin clients.

Main advantages to migrating.....the user interface has many new capabilities such as tear-off tab sheets and the ability to personalize to a far greater extent. Ditto for customization....you can very nearly completely rewrite any screen and add many more fields than in 6.1 without using VB Forms (they are gone but you can add your own sheets to screens). Another huge difference is in the dashboard screens you can create. In short the benefits are not so much in what you get as where you can go with it to optimize it for your company. On the flip side, if you are heavily invested in Report Builder reports there will be a cost to convert them all to Crystal Reports or dashboard queries. User are also going to need to be very carefully trained to use screens in an optimum fashion (especially when selecting data).

I am planning for our migration to take roughly one full year (after a minimum 3 month investigation and justification process) - mainly for report migration and screen customization (and then LOTS of user training) but all of this with close coordination with key department managers to codify processes and procedures. This migration is not at all trivial. At least in the early stages Epicor is pushing consulting services partly to assure successful migrations so that support is not swamped. Once a "history" is developed and common pitfalls are identified I suspect things will losen up.

Ditto.

In addition, you will also have to re-work from scratch any
customized Crystal Forms you may be using. The process that used to
create .dbf files to dump data to the forms now uses XML. The nice
thing about that is that it is supposed to be much easier to add data
to the forms. In other words, the sub-report work around that many
of us have learned, should not be necessary in the future. YES!
Also, Crystal Reports can be distributed with a special run-time
license when you buy it through Epicor. That will be a great (CHEAP)
alternative for those of us who have been using Enterprise for report
distribution and I think those that are using executables for
distribution will like it as well.
