Rob, we are taking the same approach you are with the exception that we are not maintaining MRO inventory anywhere.

After much discussion we felt the benefits of having everything completely in vantage didn't outweigh the negatives (larger part master, additional inventory transactions etc). We ended up going with a hybrid approach, where we created purchase orders for MRO/supply items line by line as an 'other' type purchase so we could get visibility of when, who, and how much, but without all the inventory transaction overhead. We do of course receive the items in through receipt entry of course so the PO's close and we can be aware of vendor performance for on time delivery and open requirements. Inventory levels and MRO part master, as well as PO suggestions are maintained in a 3rd party database. We use service connect to make the 3rd party system transparent to Vantage by creating the PO's in vantage and reconciling receipts in Vantage to the other system.

I would like to set up all the MRO items from the tool crib as parts in Epicor 9 so that we can better track and report on them, especially for historical reporting.

It seems like the best solution would be to put these items into Epicor as we create PO's for these items and our current system doesn't really allow for historical reporting on who we bought it from when and for how much. We would want to keep track of prices, inventory, prices, inventory transactions, etc... (similar to how inventory parts are kept track of in Epicor now).
