By setting all materials to constrained you are essentially abdicating intelligent human control of resulting job schedules (generating demand) to the current supply schedules.
You will still get MRP messages to expedite but they will be messages that must be processed in a specific heirarchy (Jobs late to Req'd By dates or upper level sales order demands) to actually drive any kind of systemic expediting process.
Constraining specific parts should be the exception (if EVER done) - not the rule as I asume you are planning skilled material planners and buyers to MAKE things happen in the company's and customer's interest - not to accept a system generated plan that could otherwise be improved with some effort by people intervening.

Brian,
What version are you running? I would love to know how you ironed
out the MRP issues- we are still struggling after 12 months and
upgrading from C to I. What's you general business process? We "push"-
finite quantities to issue, then yield loss as processing progresses.
We also process partials (splitting isn't a good choice for us- we'd
have to run each item as it's own job), and the fact that scheduling
keys on the operation start, rather than the operation completion is
giving us fits, as well.
The last of our MRP issues concerns constrained materials- as all of
our materials are constrained (both manufactured and purchased), we are
having issues with MRP suggestions that can't be done (expedite PO),
but the suggestion is taken as gospel, and jobs not rescheduled.
Are you seeing this issue, as well?
Any assistance is much appreciated!
As for setting MRP to run automatically, in the system agent, create a
process and set the times to run, then when you go to "Process MRP" in
the menu, you can assign it to that process by selecting the process on
the pull down. Be sure to select "recurring", so it runs every time the
process starts. We've had sequencing issues with Global Finite
Scheduling and Global Alerts, so I would suggest running them in that
order- MRP, GFS, then Alerts.
