(O.T) Linux version & SVR4?

Dan,

FreeBSD is possibly your best bet. You can optionally install a SVR4
Binary Compatability Layer that may run your Profitkey software.

Sorry for the off topic post. The broad experience base here is invaluable
to me.

I have an old Unisys box running SVR4 it has our old ERP application
(Profitkey) on it. The box died for unknown reasons. I would like to yank
the hard drive and install it as secondary drive on a Linux machine. On SuSe
website I found a download for SuSe i386. I could not find anything to
explain the difference between it and SuSe 9.0. Which version is most likely
to most compatible with the Unix SVR4

Thanks

This is a tough one! :-) If you are going to just mount this drive on a
Linux machine, you must know what file system you used on this computer. I
am going to assume it is UFS which is supported by linux and was the
standard filesystem for SVR4 (BSD-like filesystem). I would think that one
of the BSD's would be a better match for you if you are trying to build a
machine that will run your old software... you should shoot a post over to
one of the BSD's user groups.

Dan,

The i386 reference you saw on their website is referring to the
architecture - Intel 386. This means that the software will run on
anything down to a 386. If you got a i486 build, for example, the
software would be optimized for a 486 processor and would run on
anything down to a 486 (not a 386). In general, you want to get the
build closest to your current processor as possible for optimal
performance. The i386 probably was 9.0.

If it is possible to mount up this disk under Linux (and I'd be
surprised if it cannot be), it should work on most all flavors of Linux
as it would be a kernel feature and they all share that. SuSe may not
be your best bet if you are looking for something to easily download.
Try this one out:

http://www.knoppix.net/get.php

...it is a full Linux on a bootable CD. My guess is that if you have
the drive hooked up and boot off this CD you'll be able to mount it up
as easily as clicking on its desktop icon.

Let me know if you have any questions,
AE
