Yes the tapes are high, but we did not have much choice. In the future we
will be needing to back up 50 Gigs or more and with that much data your
transfer time gets to be quite long. We back up and verify about 25 gig in a
little less than 4 hours or so. Much of that is uncompressed on a 160 GB NAS
drive.
We went with the DLT 8000. It has slots for 7 dlt IV tapes and a cleaning
tape. You can load it up and forget about it. It will rotate thru the tapes
during the week. If you were to max out a tape it will span to the next.
Our system is an ATL Products PowerStor L200, but I think it is a HP drive
with a different name on the box.

Thanks for the reply. Have you found the DLT drive to be more reliable? What
brand did you go with ? I have priced the HP unit .The media set cost (5-6
tapes) at $300-$400 was also a turn off.

Dan,
17 or 18 gig was all we were able to get out of our 4mm dats. We finally
went to DLT and an autoloader. It works great.
As you said, it all depends on the file type and the ability of those files
to be compressed.
Good Luck.

Subject: [Vantage] O/T NT NATIVE BACKUP ?
I am trying to troubleshoot my nightly Veritas Backup Exec Job. I want to
recreate the job in the native NT backup utility to check software
compression on my 4mm Dat drive. Does the NT backup application have an
Exchange agent? Lately my tapes have been ejecting after 17gig of data is
written to a 12 / 24 gig tape. I realize that file types being backed up
will determine the amount of compression. The server has less than 24 gig
written to it. I would of thought it would write more than 17 gig before
filling the tape?
Thanks
