ODBC Error on nonconf.Description Field

I never thought you were criticizing me. I know how tricky licenses
get. I would never call vantage support and tell them I write the
database with my own applications and have replaced some of theirs
with my own. I would be black listed. I am just impatient and those
ehancement requests just seem to take forever. Keep watching I hope
to have license free .r code that will let you change the sql width
settings. Shhh! Don't tell Epicor.

Hi Group

Can anybody help? We are on Vantage 5.2 211 using Merant 3.6 driver.
ODBC normally works fine. But when I try to write a report (Single
table) using nonconf table and description field it comes up with an
ODBC and dll errors.

Does anybody now of a fix?

Thanks in Advance

We have the same problem. There is no fix for this using ODBC. We have to
export our table to a text file with 4GL code and then link it or import it
to an application. The driver cant handle the length of the field.

Gary,
I've not run into this, but it sounds like a situation for shortening the length of that field in Vantage. Crystal has a 255 character limit in blob (memo) fields before it does funny things. Epicor gave me that solution about another problem I was having, maybe they could help you with this one.

I have run into this anywhere that you try to link to any description field
in Access. Description fields are defined from Vantage as a memo field.
What you need to do is create a make table query just listing say a part
number, part description and of course company. Then when the table is made
go into the table description and change the part description to a text
field and change the length. Now you can use this table in other queries.
But then you must also go back to the original make table query and now
change it to an append query. Then you should write a delete table for each
time you access this table you would want to refresh it. So you would write
a macro in Access which would first delete the make table then run the
append query to refresh the description table. It doesn't work if you leave
it as a make table because then you would have to change the description
item to text each time you refresh it. By changing this to an append table,
it will refresh the data and the description will stay as a text field. If
you need further information please contact me off list.

The fix is to adjust the SQL length of the field. The default SQL
width value is 60 characters. If you go over this the ODBC driver
will report MAX Length or Precision errors. The ODBC SQL max width
is 31995 characters. So all you have to do is bump the the field
width up. Problem is with the stanard Progress package the database
schema is read-only. I use Provision so it is not a problem for me,
but I don't how Epicor handles these problems with standard users.

Since this has been a list topic from time to time and I'm sure been
discussed with Epicor over time, since Epicor issued the odbc driver, and
since there isn't a common known solution, and since we are still having the
problem, it hasn't been handled yet. Not that I wouldn't love to have your
solution, I would have to ask would such a "non-sanctioned" solution impact
my license agreement. The other thing I'd have to ask is since it doesn't
appear to be an insurmountable problem to skilled hands, Why don't we have
an Epicor sanctioned solution to a common/simple problem?

Peter,

Just so its clear, my post was not criticizing you in anyway, it can be a
real minefield when it comes to licenses. A user thinks they're helping out
but gets told that its verboten to that particular thing. I'm just jealous
you have the high priced spread, and I have the margarine. ;-}
