Hope you're not getting too wet there. We're out east in Northwestern Pennsylvania. Thanks for the offer.

Troy,

Fiber is really the only way to go. It has gotten to be much less expensive
than it used to be and you don't have to worry about lightening or ground
potential differences (When the power in each building is not exactly the
same and it tries to equalize across your copper network lines! I have had
that problem before). You can now buy a Linksys 24 port switch for under
$400 and the fiber modules for it are about $115. This switch is a 10/100
switch and the fiber module is 100mb. We have fiber run between 4 buildings
here and have never had anything but the best of service from it. We put
ours in over 10 years ago.

We just connected two buildings with fiber under the parking lot. The
trench was the only expensive part. The fiber itself is cheaper than
wireless. Works flawlessly.

Is anyone using Cat5 Network Extenders to get up to 600ft? Specs say it is 1.5 MB, but seems much less expensive than fiber - especially for a temporary situation.

We have one run to a PC almost that long (540' ) but there is a switch at
about 320' along the way. I was told we could have another 300' (OK 100m)
beyond the switch and it does work fine at 100Mb. This is all inside our
plant so this might not be practical for you to have a switch hanging over
the street ;) . I think fiber is really the way to go now that costs are
similar to copper (within 10% I think) and fiber will have other benefits
elsewhere over the long term. Example; a good way to segment one section of
network from another for lightning protection.

You could use Thin Ethernet (coaxial cable - 10Base2) which has a maximum
distance of 607 feet. The you are limited to 10-mbps. Hubs need the BNC
connectors and must have 50-ohm terminator at each end of cable.
1000' of cable for $45.00 -

The main thing to be concerned about with 10-Base2 is the possiblity of
ground problems and 10-mpbs limit (bandwidth).

If this is truly temperary sollution throw two or three hubs in between to
use solely as repeaters and that should get you through. I know that it is
totally out of spec. but we've done that in the past with a fair share of
success. (Expect a daily crash or two on the remote systems)

We are moving to a new building soon, which is 600 -700ft. from our

1. What options do we have to connect the 9 PC's across a parking lot and
connect to our network (and Vantage server)? This would be a temporary

2. I believe 600ft. is beyond the capability of CAT5 wire. Can wireless

It would be cheaper and less problems with fiber. Only a few hundred
bucks, and works well.

I'd love to find how to do fiber for a few hundred. Most fiber options I've looked into require at least $1000 for the hubs on either end of the fiber, plus a technician to hook it all up.

Anyone have cheaper sources? If we could, I'm sure we would use it far beyond 6 months.
