[Off Topic] Auto Update on Windows 2000 problem

Jasper,

You can create a local group policy to control this. We do it on our XP
systems and I am quite certain the same applies to Win2K.

The only way to resolve this is to get a valid office disk, of the same
version and build (look in "about") and let it do its thing. It doesn't
matter if you didn't use that disk to install.

I think I ran into that once when I installed Office on a fresh Win2k box
before I ran the Windows Update stuff.

IIRC, the "Microsoft Installer" package gets updated, and software that was
installed with the old version gets confused and does what you
describe. Try MS's web site, but I think I had to un- and re- install Office.

Also, I always use the "custom install" with Office, and try to set
everything to "install" or "do not install". Leaving options set at "run
from CD" or "install on first use" is problematic. Ironic this is, if you
leave all the optional components out, it only saves like 15 or
20MB; brilliant feature, Billy!

I've been seeing this for the last year when I'm setting up a new users
computer. What I do is make the user a local admin, throw in the Office cd,
and pull the local admin and reboot. After that it is fine.

We buy Office via Open license which allows you to install via a network
share. I too always install as RUN ALL FROM COMPUTER, but doing it from
a hidden network share that remains constant allows any installer
attempts to access the share where it was originally installed from.
