Off-Topic - Backup Storage Media

Steve,

I use a 110/220 GB Super DLT drive which does a great job. On my monthly I
backup about 40 PC's and 5 Servers (completely) for a total of about 175 GB
of data in under 17 hours.

I am considering replacing our current DDS3 12 Gb tape backup device to
something faster and that can store more data per tape. The server
backing up the data is running Small Business Server 4.5 (therefore, NT
4.0 and no USB support).

I want to get at least 40 Gb backed up nightly on one tape.

Any advice or insight into what is the fastest, most dependable and
economical product?

Travan tapes? DAT tapes? DLT tapes?

So many vendors are telling me so many different things.

What do you unbiased folks suggest?

Thank you in advance for your input.

We've been really happy with the hardware cost/speed/capacity mix of our DLT
backup ($1,100 internal, 6Mbps, 40/80GB). There are faster more expensive
options (LTO-Ultrium) for 3X the cost ($3,300 external,15Mbps,100/200GB) but
DLT seemed a good middle ground and there are options for stackers, etc...
for more automated processing. DLT media is expensive ($60/cart) but less
than Ultruim($80). I used to use Travan but the capacity was not high
enough and the speed too slow if I wanted to do a quick restore. Maybe that
has changed. DLT-IV with 80GB (compressed) should provide some capacity
headroom if you are looking for 40GB now.
