Here's my two cents. I build my own pc's. I use ASUS A7N266-VM
motherboards with AMD 2100 processors. The motherboard has build in 10/100
NIC, 32 MB Nvidia video card and audio if you want to enable it. My
engineers are plenty happy running ProE on these. They're a major upgrade
from the P3 800's they had been using.

Try www.adamant.com <http://www.adamant.com/> located in
Cleveland, I’ve been very happy with both price and service. Very nice
selection of brands. Call John Defranco at 216-595-1211 ext 239. Tell
him Shirley sent you. They have everything you need to build low,
medium, high or VERY high performance machines. They can provide OEM
OS’s at very reasonable prices.

Tip #1: Focus on one machine at a time. Don’t try to production line
them.

Tip #2: When you build, build them all the same, that is use the same
main board for EVERYTHING you can. Vary chip and memory and hard drive.
You will not regret it when you can yank a board from some other machine
and have that important server back up and running in 20 minutes. (That
is exactly what happened to me this week. Came in at 6:30, board
totally fried. Up and running with a replacement by 7).

Tip #3: If you’re going to build 10 boxes get 10 same sized cardboard
containers to hold the “left overs”, the manuals, the software
documentation and anything else that goes with that box. I use static
IP’s and number the boxes with the IP address.

Actually I spec out the parts from a local supplier then hire them to bolt it all together. It's worth the extra $50 per PC. They have component prices below any of the catalogs (PCMall, CDW, TigerDirect) and are very responsive. It's in Eagan, MN and called CaDan Comp[uters - but they ship all over. www.cadan.com . The weekly fax/email components price sheet is a great barometer of price trends. I just bought 5 custom config PCs from them. For at home I built 3 of our 4 PCs myself form their parts. If you call them ask for Dan Rogers (owner) and tell him I refered you (I don't get anything other than I just like to let him know I'm happy enough to send people to him so he should keep me happy).

As far as tips...I usually by as high end as I can afford for the application but just below the "knee" in the price curve. For example CPUs might be $20 difference up to a point where they jump in $300 increments. I usually buy case with a bigger power supply to stress it less. The rest depends on what it will be used for (light desktop, power user, server).

Any options on building small boxes? As in, small power supplies, small
cases, 1 hard drive, mini-mother board (?), no floppy, no CD, etc. ( use
external cd to setup via usb port )

I'd love PC's that are about the size of the proverbial loaf of bread with
no floppy and no internal cd for use at our company. Something small that
doesn't take over the desk or need to be under the desk like a mini-tower.
( The last 10 'floor' mounted mini-towers I've opened up have been doing a
fabulous job of doubling as vacuum cleaners. Dust bunny city. )

Very nice range of cases. Though I’ve never looked at mini’s but John
has about 10 different vendors for mainboards. (I’ve always found the
mini boards are hard to find.) Adamant by the way does a lot with AMD my
personal preference. Though they do have a similar selection of
Pentiums. I like AMD’s because you get a better bang for your buck.

MB's, power supplies and the like. It is the standard for the small form
factor systems you are looking for.

Tip #2: When you build, build them all the same, that is use the same main
board for EVERYTHING you can. Vary chip and memory and hard drive.
You will not regret it when you can yank a board from some other machine
and have that important server back up and running in 20 minutes. (That is
exactly what happened to me this week. Came in at 6:30, board totally
fried. Up and running with a replacement by 7).

Tip #3: If you’re going to build 10 boxes get 10 same sized cardboard
containers to hold the “left overs”, the manuals, the software
documentation and anything else that goes with that box. I use static
IP’s and number the boxes with the IP address.

external cd to setup via usb port )

I'd love PC's that are about the size of the proverbial loaf of bread with
no floppy and no internal cd for use at our company. Something small that
doesn't take over the desk or need to be under the desk like a mini-tower.
( The last 10 'floor' mounted mini-towers I've opened up have been doing a
fabulous job of doubling as vacuum cleaners. Dust bunny city. )

I'd love PC's that are about the size of the proverbial loaf of bread with
no floppy and no internal cd for use at our company. Something small that
doesn't take over the desk or need to be under the desk like a mini-tower.
( The last 10 'floor' mounted mini-towers I've opened up have been doing a
fabulous job of doubling as vacuum cleaners. Dust bunny city. )

Tip #1: Focus on one machine at a time. Don’t try to production line them.

Tip #2: When you build, build them all the same, that is use the same main
board for EVERYTHING you can. Vary chip and memory and hard drive.
You will not regret it when you can yank a board from some other machine
and have that important server back up and running in 20 minutes. (That is
exactly what happened to me this week. Came in at 6:30, board totally
fried. Up and running with a replacement by 7).

Tip #3: If you’re going to build 10 boxes get 10 same sized cardboard
containers to hold the “left overs”, the manuals, the software
documentation and anything else that goes with that box. I use static
IP’s and number the boxes with the IP address.

Haven't had a need to try them yet. We do use several of these in the shop
for data collection and SPC workstations. Nice small foot print and have
been holding up so far in the shop.

Here's my two cents. I build my own pc's. I use ASUS A7N266-VM
motherboards with AMD 2100 processors. The motherboard has build in 10/100
NIC, 32 MB Nvidia video card and audio if you want to enable it. My
engineers are plenty happy running ProE on these. They're a major upgrade
from the P3 800's they had been using.
