[Off Topic] Hard drives

Paul,
Maybe WD has changed there RMA policy. I've always gotten a 'refub.' for my warranty returns on bad WD. Then the refurb. goes bad after that.

Todd,

Personally I don't have the best experience with Western Digital drives, and
especially the unreliable bearings they use. As the matter of fact, the
only drives I have seen and heard failing are the WD Caviars. Usually you
will get the louder than normal whine, grinding and clicking. From what you
describe and my experiences you still have a few days to get your important
data off of the drive, but don't wait too long.

In WD's defense; their RMA department has gotten extremely efficient in
replacing failed HD's with blank new ones. Even for failed drives that were
waaay outside of the warranty period.

HTH,

Paul

Anyone have any experience with Western Digital 120gb, 7200 rpm IDE drives?

Just received one and it sounds like a tiny router buzzing away ... from
across the room.

I'm trying to decide if this is the nature of the beast ...

Thanks,

Todd Anderson

I've got two of them and one sounds like a miniature airplane tacking off
and the other doesn't. You can read about it here:

Todd,

I have a couple of Quantums & IBMs in a 9GB SCSI flavor, and they do the
same thing. It's driving the engineers crazy. Thank Heavens they're
finally out of warranty. When they break, I'll buy new Seagates.

Todd,

I've just gone thru 4 of them. They wouldn't work in a RAID5 array. They
all seem to run hot. And the first one died completely. The last 2 seem to
function. I'm trying buying Maxtor now. I'm told they have a better return
policy than Western Digital. As far as the buzzing - haven't noticed that.
But I'm really wondering whose drives actually work anymore. Even I can
ship anyone a quadzillion terrabyte drive - if I don't have to guarantee
it'll work. MTBF = :)

Quantum has proven to be a very good drive. It's actually as it turns out a
high end Maxtor. Which is my Hard drive of choice.

I bought one for my home pc. $139 at Micro Center. Works fine ...so far.
No weird noises.

As a rule though, I will not buy WD for the company. Maxtor, Seagate,
possibly Quantum.

Todd,

As the rest of the responses, as a general rule, we also will not buy
Western Digital. At one time, that is all we would purchase, but we
have had them fail 85% of the time. We currently purchase Seagates
Barracuda.
