[Off Topic] iPacs

The iPaq is expandable, with 6 USB ports, though it does not have any more
expandability than a good 'ol generic desktop PC. You do not have the
capability of installing a PCI card on an Ipaq, though there is a
proprietary "MultiBay" which gives you some options as far as drives go.

USB wireless adds $170 to the price.

I hope the unit has more than one USB Bus, though I suspect the 6 usb ports
could be running off one bus. Don't have time to go digging into the specs
right now.

The design takes a cool minimalistic approach. The decreased size and
proprietary yet ingenuitive design that shies away from legacy technologies
might justify the cost, in specific applications. Then again, its nothing
new. Looks like a laptop with no monitor or integrated keyboard/pointing
device, propped up on its side.

I agree on the price issue however, I've been considering buying one these
items and the add in functionality is quite awesome. It would seem you can
plug in bar code readers, GSM, wireless LAN, 5Gb hard drives and even GPS
modules amongst others. But then I'm easily led where toys are concerned .
. . .

Rumour has it that Bill is working on a iPac with on board GSM phone due
early next year.

The Ipaq Desktops
http://www.compaq.com/products/desktops/deskpro_iPAQ.html

run windows 2000, and has USB ports, so you could probably hook it up to
wireless through USB.

seems overpriced for the features it paqs, but that's the price for
portablility. Looks like a proprietary laptop motherboard shoved into a mini
case with no monitor. Serial and paralell ports are optional, add to cost.

I've only just discovered iPacs running Microsoft 2002 and their potential.
Do any of you use these, with what add ons/expansion and are there any
significant problems?

I'm wondering if they could handle Data Collection/Job Tracker on a wireless
LAN.

Talking about Data Collection and wireless LAN, are we the only ones having
problems with trying to collect bar coded info on a slower connection ? We
have the Data Collection module and were planning to use WelchAllyn
ImageTeam 3800 scanners to clock in and out, and eventually for jobs and
travellers ,etc.
We made our own bar codes and coded them to clock-in and/or clock-out in one
swipe. Works fine when testing in the office, but going out in the shop,
connected to a 10/100 switch that's linked to the "Vantage" switch through a
100Bfx link ( total 100Mbps) with 4 users on it, the clock out just does'nt
seem to make it. There is basically no traffic on that switch...
Clock in is fine but clock out stops on the window "Cloking out user...".
Press OK and it's OK. Tried to add "o" and "alt O" to make it go through,
but to no avail..
We're at the point now where we'll have to run a dedicated 100Mbps cable
from the "Vantage" switch to this Data Collection station just to be able to
clock out in one swipe.
I don't remember reading about any of you having this kind of problem so i
wonder if there's a fix I might not know about ?
Or is this just "normal" ?
My original plan was to install wireless stations in the shop that we could
move around if needed without having to reroute the network cable. This
indicates it probably would not work because of speed..

Any comment appreciated
Thank you all
