OK... one for the NT folks. I have a PDC and three BDC servers. The
Primary Domain Controller is getting some age on it and I want to promote
one of the backups to primary. When I do this do I need to take the PDC
offline or does it get "demoted" in the process. If I do take the PDC
offline to promote a server do I have to re-install it as a stand alone
before putting it back on the network?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks!

If you build a PDC with W2K Server you have to go all the way i.e., you
should be in an AD environment.

Thanks Michael and David ! It's been a while since NT admin class... I
think that was 3.51 anyway. One of my account reps told me I could upgrade
the PDC to Windows 2000 server and go that route. ???

Thanks Again for your input

Keep the PDC online and when you promote the BDC, the current PDC will be
demoted. It would be worthwhile checking that all are on the same SP.

I believe you have to re-install if you want a server to no longer be a
BDC.

Here we go again:) We were just told by Softmart Inc. and there Microsoft
software specialist that if we upgrade to 2000 server and make it a domain
controller we were not required to upgrade our cals to be legal.

Steve,
Yes, that was the problem we encountered as well. Nothing short of
re-formatting the Win2k workstation would get it to log on to an NT domain
again.

As for the licensing, legally, you must upgrade your CAL's to Win2k format,
and technically, you should also upgrade the client license to a win2k as
well according to Microsoft. Nt workstation will authenticate on a 2000
domain, but it has problems with the 2000 extended rights as applied
locally.

Have you ever promoted an NT BDC to a PDC on your 2000 domain. I think you
might have some troubles if you try, most likely from the win2k workstations
and any domain trust relationships you might have set up.

David,

I have been running W2K servers (domain controllers) with my NT4 BDC with no
problems for the last year or better. The only problem we have ever run
into is when we had only one W2K DC with W2K Pro clients on the network; if
we took that one server down for any reason, W2K clients could not logon to
the network. Apparently, once W2K Pro finds a W2K DC it will never
authenticate to an NT4 server again. Other than that everything has been
working just fine. We've never had to upgrade the CALs and everything has
worked just like I expected it to.

no, No NO... (reaches throught the internet & grabs the disk out of your
hand) :O)
Be very careful with windows 2000. If you upgrade your PDC to 2000, you
will
have to upgrade all your CAL's (computer access licenses) for each
connected
PC from NT version to Win2k version, and also upgrade your BDC's to 2000
as
well. The domain control & trusts etc are also different on windows 2000.
Do not go this way unless you intend to spend more money, and are
dedicated
to changing all of your servers to operating on 2000. Windows 2000 domains
are different to NT domains. You can have a Win2k server in a NT domain,
but
not as a BDC or PDC.

Hmmm!
We were informed exactly the opposite by Microsoft Australia. To be quite
honest, I have just about had enough of all the different Microsoft upgrade
and licensing agreements, etc which change constantly. It seems even
Microsoft can't decide how best to rip us off.
