That would be a *very*surprising change; I'd like to see the article if
you can track it down.

Sun has been committed to keeping it free, and even if they were to do an
about-face on that, OpenOffice.Org still offers it free via their parallel
development efforts.

Sun does charge a small amount ($40) for a media package that includes a
nice printed manual and CD, but you've always had the option to download it
for free (if you have the bandwidth for 90MB or so!) They also offer
tech-support contracts for a fee, but that has been their only source of
profit from it. I think their real motivation is just the satisfaction of
sticking it to Micro$**t ;)

Oh yeah... and while Star Office frequently gets mentioned with Linux as a
totally non-MS alternative, it does run on Windows too. You can stick with
a MS OS for compatibility with Vantage and all your other favorite
applications, but avoid forking over $500 for every user that needs a
spreadsheet & word processor.

OK... one for the NT folks. I have a PDC and three BDC servers. The
Primary Domain Controller is getting some age on it and I want to promote
one of the backups to primary. When I do this do I need to take the PDC
offline or does it get "demoted" in the process. If I do take the PDC
offline to promote a server do I have to re-install it as a stand alone
before putting it back on the network?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You have to promote one of the other BDC's while the PDC is online. This
will automatically demote the PDC to a BDC. Once you have the new PDC
online, you can remove the old PDC (now BDC) and do whatever you like with
it. When it is ready, follow the same procedures as before, promote the
"new" BDC to PDC and this will demote the old PDC. There are a few pitfalls
with NT which I can't remember off the top of my head, it's been about a
year since we did this.
Check out the Technet on Microsoft.com for more detailed info.

Keep the PDC online and when you promote the BDC, the current PDC will be
demoted. It would be worthwhile checking that all are on the same SP.

I believe you have to re-install if you want a server to no longer be a BDC.

(This was the reply which went missing this morning. I am re-posting it now
that Yahoo seems to be working again.)

602 is even less MS Word compatible than star office (which is pretty good
with MS Word up to office 2000), and almost totally incompatible with Excel.
I know as I have tried both 602 and Star Office.

1. Upgrades options to Microsoft Applications (i.e. Microsoft Office) and
Servers (Windows 2000 Server) will be no longer available as of August 1,
2002. You have from now until July 31, 2002 to decide whether it is in your
companies best interest to put the Microsoft software that you are currently
invested into either Upgrade Advantage or Software Assurance. Please see
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing for details. Also, check with a reseller
to get a cost comparison of purchasing before July 31 and after. I can
recommend a reseller if that helps.

2. Office Small Business Edition (SBE) will no longer have upgrades.
Customers who wish to enroll their Office XP SBE license in Office Standard
Upgrade Advantage (UA) are eligible to do so, from Jan 1, 2002 - July 31,
2002. These customers in turn will be eligible for future releases of Office
Standard that are released during the term of their UA coverage. The
customer will be entitled to future releases of Office Standard, since they
are enrolled in Office Standard UA. This means they will be entitled to
Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook licenses. They would not be eligible to
future releases of Publisher as Publisher is not a component of Office
Standard. You can keep the version of Publisher that came with your copy of
Office SBE on your machine. You will just not qualify for upgrades to
Publisher automatically. When a customer with Office SBE enrolls in Office
Standard UA, the customer will be eligible for Office Standard Software
Assurance upon the expiration of their Office Standard UA. Contact me
directly if you have questions.

3. OEM and Full Package Product of Microsoft Office Application Software
does not allow for downgrade rights or network capabilities. You can
purchase Upgrade Advantage until July 31, 2002 which will give you these
capabilities if needed. OEM licenses are typically tied to the machine from
which it was preinstalled. The added benefit of purchasing Upgrade Advantage
on those application licenses is that the license becomes independent from
machine and can be transferred when machine replaced. It also includes the
right to stay current with two-year agreement. On August 1, 2002, you should
consider these factors before purchasing a new machine with Office
preinstalled. Upgrade Advantage or Software Assurance will not be options at
that point.

4. Windows XP OEM licenses can be downgraded no further than Windows 98
Second Edition, however the OEM does not have to supply the media. Under the
Volume Pricing Program Win XP can be downgraded to Win 95. OEM desktop
operating system software license* is tied to machine. Technical support is
ultimately OEM responsibility, and for original configuration only. The
customers have the right and tools to restore system back to original
configuration. Also, you have the right to ghost and reimage (WinXP OEM
license only). Again, there is no requirement for the OEM to supply media or
support. You must keep proof of license, as it is hard-copy EULA (End User
License Agreement) or COA (Certificate of Authenticity)

*Both the "product" and the "license" are tied to the machine; therefore,
the license is retired with the machine regardless of whether or not it had
been enrolled into Upgrade Advantage/Software Assurance. However, it is
permitted to apply the unused upgrade rights from old machines to their
replacements. If the upgrades under UA/SA had been previously applied to the
old machines, they cannot be then transferred to replacement machines.

5. Windows NT Server 4.0/Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Promotion: Microsoft is excited to announce a Windows Advanced Server
Software Assurance and Upgrade Advantage promotion to provide the easiest
and most economical path to upgrade from Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2000
Advanced Server and to purchase Software Assurance for Windows 2000 Advanced
Server. This promotion is available today through July 31, 2002. Please see
this web site for details,
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/server/howtobuy/pricing/saua/overview.a
sp or contact me directly.

6. Windows NT 4.0 support no longer available in 2003! I would recommend
that your organizations start planning migrations for fall 2002 to have in
place by the turn of 2003. Upgrade Advantage is a great solution to cover
your licenses for future upgrades (2 years worth of upgrades from date of
purchase). Upgrade Advantage does not require that you install/deploy within
2 years. It just allows you the rights to any releases of newer versions of
the product within a 2 year period. There are no guarantees that Microsoft
will have upgrades within the 2 years, but we typically have an 18 - 24
month upgrade cycle on most products. Upgrade Advantage is only available
until July 31, 2002. The Microsoft® Windows NT® Server 4.0 family of
operating systems began entering the marketplace in September 1996. After
five years on the market-and with the increasing adoption of its successor,
the Windows® 2000 Server family of operating systems-Windows NT Server 4.0
is being retired in phases. This article describes the schedule for changes
in product availability and support,
http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/ProductInfo/Availability/Retiring.asp

January 1, 2003 Beginning on this date, customers requesting non-security
QFEs will be charged a fee. (Premier customers should contact their Premier
Technical Account Manager for details on associated fees.)

January 1, 2004 Pay-per-incident and Premier support will no longer be
available. Non-security QFEs will no longer be available.

January 1, 2005 (or later) Online support will no longer be available.
7. Microsoft Content Management Server 2001: Microsoft Content Management
Server is the enterprise Web content management system that enables
businesses to quickly and cost-effectively deploy dynamic and personalized
e-business Web sites. It dramatically reduces the time required to build and
deploy these e-business applications and provides an enterprise scalable and
reliable solution. By empowering employees with the comprehensive
applications they need to be able to manage their own content, enterprises
benefit through increased productivity, stronger customer and partner
relationships, improved internal communication and increased revenue. Check
out this web site to see how you can get trial software,
http://www.microsoft.com/catalog/display.asp?subid=22&site=10978&x=15&y=15

8. Microsoft Operations Manager 2000 Limited Time Price Promotion:
Microsoft is implementing a six-month Worldwide Microsoft Operations Manager
2000 price promotion effective November 1, 2001 until April 30, 2002 to
accelerate adoption into companies of all sizes so they too can manage their
Windows-based servers and applications more easily, reducing costs and
increasing reliability. The Estimated Retail Price (ERP) for this promotion
covers the following: Base Processor License - $349 US ERP (regular price:
$849 US), Application Management Pack Processor License - $349 US ERP
(regular price: $949 US). For more information on Microsoft Operations
Manager 2000, please check out this website: http://www.microsoft.com/mom/

For additional training on Microsoft products, licensing, etc, please feel
free to attend a district event in person or participate via the web on a

Michael,
Would you consider applying for the documentation controller at Microsoft?
That way, the rest of us normal beings might understand at least some of
their documentation and be able to figure out where we stand on licensing
etc
(I know, if you own any Microsoft products, please forward your gross profit
to Microsoft. Then they might consider allowing you to smell the packaging
on new software) :O)

I raised this query some six months ago. Linux will run the server side of
Vantage no problem, but I haven't heard of anyone that has used it as a
client OS - yet.

602 is even less MS Word compatible than star office (which is pretty good
with MS Word up to office 2000), and almost totally incompatible with Excel.
I know as I have tried both 602 and Star Office.

I really wouldn't care if they charge a nominal fee for the poduct in order
to assure future file compatibility. A one time charge of $50 or even $100
with an upgrade path (perhaps half the "new" cost) for later versions would
be fine and still far less than MS. Anything supporting the model that lets
us decide when we want to need to upgrade (or can afford to) would be
preferable.

Thanks Michael and David ! It's been a while since NT admin class... I
think that was 3.51 anyway. One of my account reps told me I could upgrade
the PDC to Windows 2000 server and go that route. ???

Thanks Again for your input

Keep the PDC online and when you promote the BDC, the current PDC will be
demoted. It would be worthwhile checking that all are on the same SP.

I believe you have to re-install if you want a server to no longer be a
BDC.

OK... one for the NT folks.

Be very careful with windows 2000. If you upgrade your PDC to 2000, you will
have to upgrade all your CAL's (computer access licenses) for each connected
PC from NT version to Win2k version, and also upgrade your BDC's to 2000 as
well. The domain control & trusts etc are also different on windows 2000.
Do not go this way unless you intend to spend more money, and are dedicated
to changing all of your servers to operating on 2000. Windows 2000 domains
are different to NT domains. You can have a Win2k server in a NT domain, but
not as a BDC or PDC.

David,

I have been running W2K servers (domain controllers) with my NT4 BDC with no
problems for the last year or better. The only problem we have ever run
into is when we had only one W2K DC with W2K Pro clients on the network; if
we took that one server down for any reason, W2K clients could not logon to
the network. Apparently, once W2K Pro finds a W2K DC it will never
authenticate to an NT4 server again. Other than that everything has been
working just fine. We've never had to upgrade the CALs and everything has
worked just like I expected it to.

Steve,
Yes, that was the problem we encountered as well. Nothing short of
re-formatting the Win2k workstation would get it to log on to an NT domain
again.

As for the licensing, legally, you must upgrade your CAL's to Win2k format,
and technically, you should also upgrade the client license to a win2k as
well according to Microsoft. Nt workstation will authenticate on a 2000
domain, but it has problems with the 2000 extended rights as applied
locally.

Have you ever promoted an NT BDC to a PDC on your 2000 domain. I think you
might have some troubles if you try, most likely from the win2k workstations
and any domain trust relationships you might have set up.

Received this fun little email today from Big-Brother and thought I'd share

1. Upgrades options to Microsoft Applications (i.e. Microsoft Office) and
Servers (Windows 2000 Server) will be no longer available as of August 1,
Our NetAdmin did a trial install of the Vantage client on a Red Hat 7.1
workstation, using the latest version of WINE last fall with no success.
(Progress client crashed on install, repeatedly). Gave up after a couple
days of intermittent fooling around with it. Looks like it's time to get
more serious about it.

I raised this query some six months ago. Linux will run the server side of

Vantage no problem, but I haven't heard of anyone that has used it as a

client OS - yet.
