[Off Topic] RAS support for Windows ME

Brian,

Thanks for the response.

We have technet and did a search to no avail. We have no problem with
Win-95 or Win-98 clients at home. MS has evidently changed the rules with
ME.

And yes, if they can't help us then we don't pay the fee. Although I'd
rather pay the fee and have an answer to what will more than likely become a
larger problem.

Todd

Todd, do you have Technet? I just searched technet on "win95 and ras" (I
know you have ME, but win95 is the keyword for all win9x articles) and got
108 articles. Although the MS techs have access to technet, so I can't
believe they would miss this.

If you don't have technet, you can go here:

PS: I used to be one of these MS techs, so let me give you a piece of
advice. If you had to pay for support and you couldn't get an answer, you
are entitled to a refund, provided that it is not a documented problem. I.e.
Unless there is a Q article, or some other piece of information you can look
up yourself, they shouldn't charge you for the call..

Ok,

Here's a classic MS story ...

We have 2 employees who have recently purchased PC's with Windows-ME. Not
by choice. That is what is being shipped on home style PC's these days.

In both cases, they have brought their PC's in for us to configure RAS so
they can dial into our network and access files, outlook, etc.

So far we are 0 for 2 on making this work.

Today, my PC tech spent 2.5 hours on the phone with MS systems support ( one
of those $ 245.00 calls ) only to be told that Windows-ME and the upcoming
Windows-XP-Home version do not support RAS as a network client.

We have been able to configure these machines to dial into and make a
connection to the network but Windows-NT4-SP6A will not authenticate them as
valid clients.

Microsoft's tech people are suggesting that we "JUST" go out purchase
Windows-2000-Professional - full retail box version and install that on
these machines.

Since I gave the list a lecture about not slamming MS a few weeks back I
have to say that "This is just xxx wonderful" ... "I'm so happy with MS" ...
"Please MS, give me 8 or 10 more operating systems to support that don't
talk to each other" ... "I just LOVE MicroSoft, they make my life so much
easier" ...

Was that politically correct ?

At any rate, has anyone else figured out a way to get Windows-ME to link
properly with Windows-NT4-Server via RAS ?

Thanks,

Todd Anderson
On the bright side, W2000 pro is soooo easy to RAS connect to an NT4.0
Server that I had to pinch myself and do a few pings and trace routes before
I believed that the RAS connection wizard actually worked!!!!

Note: your internet connection gets killed by the RAS connection but soon as
RAS is terminated, the internet connection comes back to life.

I recall that there is add on S/W from MS to get RAS on W95 to work - maybe
the same code will work on ME ?
