[off topic] software for brochures then into pdf

Photoshop is important for tweaking graphics.
For page-layout we recommend Adobe PAGEMAKER.
Excellent at setting consistent look between publications (templates),
imports text & graphics, allows for professional color matching.

We highly recommend it.

Hello,

Sorry for the way off topic.

We are getting ready to redo all of our brochures. The person who use to do
our brochure is no longer here (over 5 years ago). I have been "tweaking"
the brochures that have been done in the past. But now they want to redo
all of them. We want to make them into pdf and put them on our webpage.
(which is another story because it is out of date also) Anyways, my
question is what is the best desktop publishing software out there.

If you really want the "best" you can spend a few hundred bucks on genuine
Adobe Acrobat. I think the latest versions of MS Office will spit out PDF
files.

Or for Zero Dollars, check Open Office -- www.OpenOffice.org -- the
completely free office suite will read & write your MSO files, and can also
export them as PDFs. It's got a spreadsheet, HTML editor, word processor,
presentation creator and the other usual office components. Did I mention
it's free?!

The latest version 1.1.2 is very stable, and doesn't invade your entire
system and its registry like MSO does. So you can install it for testing
along with MSO without fear of hosing up anything.

I am redoing a bunch of our brochures at the moment. I recently purchased Adobe InDesign with the Pagemaker add-ins (to convert some of our old P65 files). It is very powerful. Incredibly so. Yet easy enough for even me to catch-on. Like a lot of software (Excel and Word included) I will probably not use 20% of the features and capabilites but it is nice to know they are there if I need (and learn) them. My son is a Graphic Design graduate and has used it to help me with the brochures and really likes it as well. One cool feature I like is automatic scaling or "fitting" of pictures to a defined area. Of course, being Adobe, it will output PDF. Best of all it works on Windows and I don't need a Mac (can't live without "right clicking").

The money we are saving over sending stuff out for design more than pays for my time and the software cost ($340 upgrade from Pagemaker). Plus we can tweak them each time we reprint. We have a local printer that has a new type of electronic Heidleburg press (no plate costs) that directly prints from .idd files we email to them (like a giant color copier).

Quark Express and PageMaker are constantly dueling it out for the "Best
Desktop Publishing" application and are far and away the favorites of the
pro's. That being said, if you don't want to spend all of your time fine
tuning typeface kerning or line spacing, you may want to look at a package
that is easy to learn. MS Publisher is simple for Brochures and Flyers and
is relatively inexpensive ($59 from SoftwareOutlet.com for Publisher 2002).
Also, it can output and upload HTML pages from your Publisher document with
the same ease that it creates .pdf files.

Ditto on the purchasing Acrobat recommendation. Once you have the layout,
Acrobat offers the most control over the final output.

Dina,
We added a new product line a few months ago and we generated a new
catalog layout using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Worked pretty
good and was a pretty quick learning curve. Also, again being adobe
products they popped the files out into PDF with no problems. Our
material vendor like them so much that we created theirs also.
