[Off Topic] Windows Desktop Search (WDS) Version 3.0

I orignally evaluated the Yahoo Desktop Search a couple years ago... the
free version did not index network drives. I purchased the OEM version
from X1 Technologies and obsolutely love it! Not just for near
instantaneous context/content level search results of emails; but having
my nearly 5TB of Job_Data indexed makes searching amazingly efficient.
Like I said the results are displayed (instantly) as you fill in the
search criteria.

Isn't this similar to what Google Desktop Search does?
I installed that a while back and have used it a number of times to find
things in my Outlook archives of this list as well as files on my
computer.
I don't remember if it does network drives (I doubt I would have let it
when
I installed it for bandwidth reasons) but it sounds similar.
Has anyone used both that can offer a compare.

I thought I would share this review of Windows Desktop Search WDS with the group.

WDS will be part of Microsoft Vista which you can download and run on XP.
This is a great opportunity to experience one of the top features of Vista before actually purchasing it.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/desktopsearch/default.mspx

I have been running it for 6 weeks now and it is very impressive.
I also downloaded the Network Scanning install.
You select the folders to on your PC and network servers to search.
You then let it build the index. If you select a lot of files it may take several hours to build so just let it run over night.
You can also search Outlook folders if you run Outlook in cached mode and also Outlook Public folders if you add the public folders to your Favorites. This just stores your items locally for WDS to search thru.

Anyway WDS is Indexing about 40,000 files for me which I can search thru instantly.
I would Highly recommend everyone in the IT world download and test this ability.

Practical Application: Does your company store PDF files, email, spreadsheets and word documents on servers, client pc's and exchange servers. WDS will let you data mine all this stuff.

For example searched using WDS for on IP address on my network and it found my notes from working on that PC, print outs of backup copies of my Cisco pix firewall where this number was referenced, it found a spreadsheet where I keep a listing of IP address assignments, WDS found email and replies where I mentioned this IP address etc..... It was definitely an eye opener.

If I was a company selling any type of Document Archiving or Storing Software I would be scared because this is now free an part of Vista.

Have Fun.

Isn't this similar to what Google Desktop Search does?
I installed that a while back and have used it a number of times to find
things in my Outlook archives of this list as well as files on my computer.
I don't remember if it does network drives (I doubt I would have let it when
I installed it for bandwidth reasons) but it sounds similar.
Has anyone used both that can offer a compare.

I have been using WDS for about the same amount of time.

Between that and Windows defender, I can't really justify any haste
toward Vista.

Us IT folk are more impressed with utility than we are pretty.

I thought I would share this review of Windows Desktop Search WDS with
the group.

WDS will be part of Microsoft Vista which you can download and run on
XP.
This is a great opportunity to experience one of the top features of
Vista before actually purchasing it.

I have been running it for 6 weeks now and it is very impressive.
I also downloaded the Network Scanning install.
You select the folders to on your PC and network servers to search.
You then let it build the index. If you select a lot of files it may
take several hours to build so just let it run over night.
You can also search Outlook folders if you run Outlook in cached mode
and also Outlook Public folders if you add the public folders to your
Favorites. This just stores your items locally for WDS to search thru.

Anyway WDS is Indexing about 40,000 files for me which I can search thru
instantly.
I would Highly recommend everyone in the IT world download and test this
ability.

Practical Application: Does your company store PDF files, email,
spreadsheets and word documents on servers, client pc's and exchange
servers. WDS will let you data mine all this stuff.

For example searched using WDS for on IP address on my network and it
found my notes from working on that PC, print outs of backup copies of
my Cisco pix firewall where this number was referenced, it found a
spreadsheet where I keep a listing of IP address assignments, WDS found
email and replies where I mentioned this IP address etc..... It was
definitely an eye opener.

If I was a company selling any type of Document Archiving or Storing
Software I would be scared because this is now free an part of Vista.

Have Fun.
