Online Backup Services - Who uses them?

Scott,
Onsite I only go back 11 months. Offsite, I have not put a recycle
function in yet, so I guess it's limited only by disk space. I expect I
will be cutting it off at a year and maybe annual year end copies after
a year. Just have not added that function yet. Now that you mention it
though I will add that to my short list of things to do. :)
Thanks,
Aaron Hoyt

We are in the middle of restructuring our backup plan. I was just
curious to see who uses the services that some companies offer allowing
you to copy your backup material to their servers? If so, which company
do you use? Do you find this useful? How much does it cost? Would you
recommend this?

Looking forward to hearing your opinions.

Thanks,
Brad
I haven't met a non-IT decision maker yet who didn't look at this idea like I'd just served them a plate of steaming horse manure and told them it was caviar.
'Are you crazy? put our data on someone else's computer, across the Internet?'

But In reality it isn't any different than handing that backup tape to the offsite service every couple weeks when they come around.

I don't personally like it as your only backup, because it requires you to have have Internet access when disaster strikes. That might not be the case.
Here in Houston, lightning storms, floods, power outages, etc. can trash our servers and leave us needing to redo and/or restore. Power might not be up for hours.
I always feel better with the tape in my hand. I can run the servers on our backup generator while restoring Vantage and be ready when power comes back, but I sure can't make the Internet work.

As a piece of your grand plan, it's probably a nice idea. We haven't needed it or used it, though.

Hi Brad,
Â
We use "eSure-it" by Intronis Technologies in addition to our raid 1 and tape. Costs about $199/m for 50GB. Have used them for 2yrs.

Not specifically relating to paid services, but offsite backup in
general...and me being generally cheap when it comes to outside services...
If you don't mind teaching yourself a few tricks, you can do this with
an $80 Linksys NSLU2 and a couple of USB harddrives to your own offsite
backup (assuming you have a VPN of some kind in place). Our data is
backed up to disk to a minimum of two locations (server and NSLU2)
onsite and to a NSLU2 offsite. We are backing up around 40-50 GB and it
runs a synchronization every evening for a few hours using my internet
connection at home. I even have it set to keep archives on a daily and
monthly schedule. I did have to learn a little bit of Linux scripting,
but it has run without issue for more than a year now keeping an ongoing
log of start and stop times and overwriting a daily log of exactly what
had changed and got backed up. Ongoing operating cost is only what it
cost to replace or upgrade USB harddrives as needed and a minimal amount
of electricity No tapes, no human intervention needed...and did I
mention no more tapes. Restore onsite is copying from one network share
to another and offsite is the same only a bunch slower. It is nice to
be able to restore a file that was accidentally changed last week to
it's previous state and in a matter of a minute or two.
