Openedge 32 bit 64 bit incompatibility - a must read

That makes a lot of sense Bob. I'd believe investing in blazing network layer hardware (and max memory clients) would far exceed any comparable gains versus 64 bit clients & presentation layer on server side.

Disturbing to hear your 8 to 9 loss of financials during the test upgrade.

Makes me glad we chose to just go up to 8 409a & not get bedazzled into messing w/ an immature 9.

Take care.

We are going through the same exercise but using
SQL. We too had those same problems and have the
32/64 bit mixed architecture is working just fine
but the construct is kludgy as running an ocean
liner with an outboard.. Only problem was that
the conversion of the 8.04 data made Accounting
inoperative....after a month with Support, nothing works in a financial sense.

We are running on VMWare and are keeping 8.04 as
our business system until E9 might possibly be
acceptable. If that day arrives we have decided
to keep our SQL Db running in 64bit but we will
run Open Edge and Epicor9 in 32 bit.....the logic
is that the Db is the thing doing most of the
"cranking", the app is not transactionaly
intensive and we don't see a presentation layer
improvement in terms of spped at the user level
regardless of which architecture the app is
running in....it's a slug in 32 and 64 bit
Server. Not even the 64 bit workstations
register a significant speed increase to warrant
the conversion from XP to Win7.

Members please take note of the following which I encountered yesterday..  I
had a long night and early morning don't let this happen to you.......

I have Vantage 8.03.04 running on win 2003 R2 64 with a 32 bit installation of
openedge 10.1B. I am wishing to move to E 9 and 64 bit openedge 10.2A, so I
proceeded to setup a test environment on my 64 bit machine but encountered the
following after install

1. Openedge 32 bit installation of admin service would not start. an error 1053
was constantly being issued
2. Progress Explorer Tool refused to start..it just stayed dead
3. Openedge 64 bit installation worked perfect however

So, Epicor Tech support tells me that bot 32 and 64 bit installation of openedge
cannot live in the same environment. I had to uninstall openedge 10.2A 64 and
10.1B 32 and reinstall the 10.1B for my admin service and PET to restart.....

Now, I am back to square one no way to test my 64 bit on my 64 bit machine once
i have my 32 bit running.... does any one have a solution other than buying a
new 64 bit machine to test this on...

If it's a test environment, you could purchase a copy of VMWare
Workstation ($170) and install your 64 bit OS as a guest and OpenEdge 64
bit.

This way you wouldn't need a new machine to test. Also, I think VMWare
makes a Virtual to Physical tool so if you were really happy with your
virtual machine setup, you could "copy" it to a physical machine
afterwards.

Testing in a virtual environment can make your life much easier.
