OT: Autodesk Inventor 5.3 on Win98SE

Hi Erik

The w98se machine is a P2 with 1gb of RAM running(?) a nVidia 4mb graphics
card. It's ok on small details but w2k pro is the way to go (never thought
I'd say that!).

I've recently seen it run on a high end XP machine through a good, powerful
graphics card, the refresh speed of big assemblies was very impressive.

Chris, I'm using a 3dLabs Oxygen VX1 which is on the 'approved'
grahphics card list. Did you have to make any other sort of setting
or Registry changes to make the Win98 machine work better? I made a
change to the registry and now the card is 'green' when I run
diagnostics under Tools/App. Options/Hardware.

to think that's going to be the way to go if this doesn't pan out.

Thanks!

Erik

Is anyone using Autodesk Inventor 5.3 on Windows 98SE with any luck?
The system is a clone running PIII 1Ghz, 512MB RAM, 40GB 7200rpm HDD
and Oxygen VX1 32MB graphics card. The system is locking and crashing
frequently when using the software. Autodesk doesn't really have any
support for Win98.

Erik,

Bite the bullet and upgrade the machine to Win2000.
We run Acad 14 in 3D and ProEngineer and it doesn't hiccup.

Pro/E does crash on occasion, but rarely does it take the OS with it.
(two times in about 8 months.)

And chances are if Inventor crashes it won't take the OS with it either.

My 2 cents

Take Richs Advice. Win2000 works great with our Autodesk and PTC products.
Its better than NT4.0.. plus easier to install. We ditched Win 98 SE on
those years ago because they kept crashing out.

We've migrated most of the company to w2K. Quite stable, and definitely
worth the extra cost.

Of course, anything less than a PIII with 128megs will be bogged down moreso
than with 98, but even then the machine will be more stable.

I'm running v5.3 on a w2k advanced server and on a w98se machine - no
significant problems. Is your graphics card one of the approved cards?
There's an Inventor web site listing mix and match performance and
exceptions. I don't have the url to hand but a search should get it. If
you don't get anywhere let me know and I'll start digging.

We're running Inventor 5.3 on W2K Pro machines and XP Pro machines... No
problems, no headaches, runs quick.

Haven't tried 98, but wouldn't recommend it - W2K or XP are much better
OS's.

I've been pleasantly surprised with W2k's performance. Back when it came
out, I set it up on an old test machine at home: a P-233 with 64MB and a
3GB disk. It actually ran pretty well. Better in fact, than W98 on the
PII-450s I had at work at the time. Win 2000 is the first windows I
actually *like* - and probably the last.

Oh yeah - and it will probably clear up all your cad/cam problems ;)

Wayne is correct

Win2000 is substantially quicker.
We had 2 identical PC's except for the OS
The W2000 machine was probably 20% to 40% faster depending on what it was doing.

If you make the switch I think you will be pleasantly suprised.
