OT: Battery Backup Unit

If like me you need to keep things cheap...but quality...
I have a single APCSmart UPS1400 that is running 4 servers (PII300 to PIII
800), one 3COM NBX 100 Phone system, 2 COM. SuperStack 3 switches and a
couple of small hubs. Add to that a cable modem router, and a monitor if I
feel the need. It will keep all this up for 15 to 20 minutes, or if I shut
down things manually, I can get a couple hours out of just the phone system.
My plan is to split the load with a second one as soon as I can buy, but
this is a workhorse for sure.
Just a thought to start with one good one if you can't get two (expand
later).

I've always been partial to APC. No real data to back it up, but they just
seem more "industrial strength" than TripLite and others.

Regardless of which brand you opt for, the APC web
site: http://apc.com/sizing/selectors.cfm has a very nice selector that
will calculate the load of your equipment. Very extensive database of
specific computer, net', and telephony equipment, plus good ball-park
numbers for generic stuff.

Well little rumble of storms over the weekend = SYS ADMIN comes in early
to turn on server after battery unit fails!

Needless to say I am looking for recommendations of a battery backup
unit!

I have a tripplite now, CDW Quoted me one but here is my question

I have two servers (Old Pentium II as my PDC with various user shares
(This is the machine that went down)
HP Netserver (PIII 900mhz) dual processor, mirrored drives, yada yada,
yada - AKA MY VANTAGE SERVER
A Extra Print Server
Plus all my switches, (3COM Matrix units)
And firewall
Right now all of that is running off a very old tripplite 700VA unit

I am trying to tell management I want to get two new units to balance
some of the load (Then I will replace batteries in the old tripplite)
and use that for my switches

What do you guys think
Would one unit be enough to handle both my PDC & my BDC?

What have you got as far as a configuration

I welcome any and all input!

James,

My 2 cents ...

I use APC SU1400NET ups units - 1400va each

I have 1 unit covering my routers and switches in my "Computer" room

Then I have 3 more units covering each of my 3 servers.

I also have 1 unit at each of my remote facilities covering routers and
switches at each location.

This translates into multiple points of failure with a load yield per
failure. As opposed to one larger unit covering the entire room.

Or, if one unit dies only a piece of puzzle dies. My PDC and BDC are
covered be separate batteries.

That sounds like way too much for a 700VA backup. I would at least double that. We use APC backups here with serial communications and software. They work great. You can probably find a sizing utility on their website. Scott Hearn - Pro-Fab, Inc.
