The Internal print servers are supposed to be faster than external print
servers.
The external print server's parallel interface is the bottle-neck (19.2
K) vs. 100 MB for Ethernet.

Gary,
To expand on what other have said already;
Internal and external JetDirect servers work in exactly the same way,
the only practical differences are-
External - needs an external power supply, yet another piece of cable to
trip over, and takes up an extra power socket
Internal - takes it's power from the host printer
External - also needs a bulky parallel cable between the server and the
printer
Internal - the interface is internal!
External - can serve up to 3 printers, and ANY parallel-connected
printer at that
Internal - brand and series specific
Both can be configured by telnet, web browser, or to a degree via HP's
Setup Net Printer Wizard (very easy)
I like the internal servers myself, much neater, and the printer itself
can still be picked up plugged into the network anywhere you want it to
be
Happy printing!

Subject: [Vantage] OT - Built-in Jetdirect vs external print
server
Hi group,
I'm purchasing a black-and-white HP Laserjet 5100tn printer for
our
Engineering Dept for MDT drawing printouts and am wondering
whether to
connect it to the network using the Jetdirect card built into the
printer or
using the external print server we already have. Anybody have a
preference?
Thanks in advance,
Gary Polvinale
