[OT] Calling Cards for China

I remember something not to long ago in the headlines about China having the
most comprehensive "nation wide" content filtering and internet site
redirection/restriction.
Might be that even with internet access you would not be able to use some of
the most popular tools.
Just my $.02.
I will see if I can find where the information was presented, but no
promises.

He is leaving laptop at home due to poor chances of Internet access (one
less thing to carry). As an update - the local agent there has advised him
that pre-paid calling cards seldom work at best and are risky (credit card
fraud) at worst. Pretty much what I had already told him. Agent adivsed
using regular Worldcom card. Actually I had hoped he would take laptop and
use Outlook Web Access due to time difference. Maybe hotel will have web
access on a PC (for $$) where he can use Yahoo or Hotmail.

Will he have computer access in China? I would maybe suggest Yahoo
messenger - or a like instant messaging program. Yahoo messenger has voice
capability if you have a microphone, and video capability if you have a web
cam - for free. You would just need someone on this side to monitor for
messages. It even has conferencing capabilities too.

The President of our company is going to be visiting some customers in
China
and has asked me (because I manage the phone system) to figure out the
lowest cost to call back to the office from over there. So far the best I
can do, reliably, is a couple dollars a minute on our regular calling
cards
from Worldcom and he things that is way too high. I can find web sites
pre-paid cards in the 60 cents a minute range but I am leery of this sort
of
on-line purchase. I can just see it now, he's over there and the cards
don't work.

Is there anyone in the group with China operations that can recommend a
reliable pre-paid calling card for calls from China back to USA?

Thanks,

That's a bargain, I just got back from a cruise and my ship to shore calls
where $15.00 minute. I kept in touch with work thru email, that was only
$2.00 a minute plus the $30.00 setup charge .
