OT: Disk Cloning Software (ie, "Ghost")

If you've got volume license keys for windows and office, you can use sysprep, but if it's oem or retail keys, I think you're stuck installing old fashioned style.

Here's my OT email of the week: I am getting ready to roll out about 20
identical PC's. I'd like to configure one PC perfectly and then clone the
drive and copy it to the others. I don't need bells and whistles or
anything relating to the cloud. I've used Ghost in the past and also see a

I'll probably never use the software again after this roll-out, so I'm
looking for any input you all may have.

Thanks!

I've used Clonezilla a number of times and it works great. And the price is right.

I have used CloneZilla numerous times and highly recommend it. The only things to keep in mind, if the destination disk is larger than the source disk, CloneZilla will not automatically extend the partition to use all of the disk space. You will need to do that manually after the cloning completes.

I like Clonezilla too, however if you're cloning a bunch of Windows PCs, in the past you had to sysprep the master image so that the domain didn't have a fit with SIDs and licenses and whatnot.

It's been a few years since I've had the need to do a cloned rollout, so I don't know if anything has changed in that regard.

But I continue to use clonezilla to backup and restore hard drive images.

There is software out there that will let you change the license key.

You will also have to change the computer name and TCP/IP (unless using
DHCP).

only
things to keep in mind, if the destination disk is larger than the
source
disk, CloneZilla will not automatically extend the partition to use all
of
the disk space. You will need to do that manually after the cloning
completes.

We don't image anymore, but when we did we used the following process:
-Install everything.
-Activate everything that uses a VLK key. Usually just windows & office.
-Take the image.

For the new machines:
-Burn the image
-Run a script we had to change the machine name/GUID/couple other things. I
forget exactly what we had in here but it was basically sysprep and a
couple things that were username specific.
-Activate anything that requires machine specific keys.

For my 2 cent I just use install scripts for this kinda thing anymore. It
takes a few minutes more to setup --though not as long as you might expect.
Once you've done it you can use them on any machine and you don't have to
worry about maintaining image libraries and such.
