OT: Engineering Plotter/print copier

We bought an Oce' 9600 almost 3 years ago, it's basically the same as the
new TDS600. It really over kill for what we need (we print about 25,000
sqft a year), but we got it at a really great price because it was a return.
It has run wonderfully for us. A few hick-up here and there but it's on a
service contract with Ikon, so they come and fix it for us. I would
recommend an Oce' to anyone looking for a dependable engineering
printer/copier.

We are looking to purchase a new combination plotter/print copier
system. We are looking at both Oce's and KIP's. Is there any feedback
on either or both systems that anyone can give me? Is one better than
the other or an personal testimonies as to what is good/bad?

Colette,
The Oce plotter is actual a canon plotter..........with a modified "hood"
We recently bought a new Oce, because the there wheren't supplies for
our old one available.
The field service of Oce is very good in Holland, that was the main
reason allthough we were not very happy when we heard that they couldn't
provide supplies anymore

General:
most new plotters have a vacuumsystem that sucks the paper to the rol,
drawback is the noise it generates.............

Also notice if your borderwith has changed, this could result in scaling
of drawings when the border (non/bad pritable area) has become bigger.
Many engineers use the "oversized" space for drawing borders (allthough
this is bad practice, it happens a lot).

Often postscript is a very expensive option, check if you need it, and
if so keep the option-price in mind
Often postscript can be replaced by ghostscript but that needs some time
implementing.

Hello, We have the OCE TDS400. And have owned it for the 3 years. So far
we have had to replace the hard drive in this system 7 times and a splice
card. Restoring the hard drive is not something we can do ourselves as it
requires service password that OCE will not release to the end user. Every
year I have had service on the machine every 3 - 4 months; I believe we have
the bearings also replaced which surprised us because we do not use it even
closes to the specs. Since we have a very low print count we had to pay
the an astronomical amount every month and, the owner of the company did not
feel it was worth it. I believe unless you get the service there is only a
90 day warranty on a $20,000 machine!



Other than that we do like the machine.
