[OT] Exchange Server alternatives

Les,
We have been using the MDaemon mail functionality for a few years and have been very pleased. NO glitches or problems... even after changing ISP's recently. The Groupware functionality is what we are looking into now so that we can share calendars, etc.

Does anyone have other experience with 'exchange' type software they they really like? Any compelling reasons to spend the $$ and use the Microsoft products?

(Wishful thinking would push me toward Linux options, but lack of knowledge and time would slap me back to reality. I did get Linux installed on an older PC, but was quite lost once I had everything installed.)

Is anyone using alternatives to Microsot Exchange Server (because of costs
or other reasons) to to share Outlook contacts/calendar/tasks, etc? Is
anyone using the specific product MDaemon Groupware to do the above? It
costs $350 for a 25 user license. I'd love to hear some comments (pro or
con) as we look at these options.

Hi Troy,
I'm at a new company, but still monitor Decorated's network for them. At my
new location, we are using MDaemon. It's pretty straight forward, and I have
all of my outlook functionality. I have not installed Groupware (release of
3/11) yet, but will be doing so. Without it, we do not have the luxury of
sharing outlook features (Global address books, calendars, etc.)across the
network with others. In the 6 weeks that I've been working with it, it's
been flawlessly self sufficient. Hope this helps. Stay in touch...

Troy,

I've heard good things about SuSE Openexchange
(http://www.suse.com/us/business/products/suse_business/openexchange/index.html).
It comes with a very nice web-based front-end, but can use Outlook as a
client also. There is an online demo at the hyperlink provided.

Adam,

Are you running SuSE Linux? I use it for our mail server and I use it home.
Are you running CrossoverOffice or Wine to run Vantage?

Edward,

I am, for the time being, a RedHat man although I have been strongly
considering going to SuSE since RedHat 8.0. How does SuSE work for your
applications? One thing I still really like about RH is the up2date
system - does SuSE have anything equivalent?

I have run Vantage through CrossoverOffice (was just using it to get a
good WINE / Internet Explorer install), but am not currently using it in
production. Have you took a swing at it? Do you think you will go with
a Linux server when Vantage supports it?

AE
I do not really use it for any applications at work. When I have taken M$
Office files home, I have had no problems using StarOffice. The only issues
are TTFonts, but this is more my fault because I have not taken the time to
install them.

At work, the mail server is running sendmail. The issue with this setup is
that we cannot use all the features that Exchange provides. We have a low
frills user environment here and the features are not missed. I looked at
the SuSE Openexchange Server, but it is tough to ask for money when no one
is asking for the features.

SuSE uses YAST2 to administer the system. You can use YOU (Yast2 Online
Update) to automatically update the system. SuSE is very proactive at
providing the latest and greatest software and patches. I am very happy
with the product.

When I found out that Vantage will support Linux I was pleased. I have not
explored the possibility of making the move, but I plan to. Linux is just
so rock solid and efficient. The performance boost on my home PC was more
than noticeable.

My issue at the moment is that our server is growing old (circa 1999) and
will need to be upgraded soon. I hope we can stretch it to be able to
consider Linux as an option.

I have setup a test Linux workstation that I have set up a Hylafax fax
server and will be looking to try to run Vantage.
