OT - Free Backup Software Question - Thanks to all

Aaron,

If you have SOX issues - you will need to encrypt the remote backup data. I
prefer 3rd party encryption utilities because it isn't tied to the Windows
ACL's.

However, as long as your are using the VPN tunnel to xfer data over the
internet - there isn't a problem, but others should be aware that transfers
using standard ftp or http are NOT secure and should take appropriate
measures to implement either SSH or SSL.

Are we having fun yet ?

Charles

Gang of over 1000:

Is anyone using/aware of a free (our budget is zero spending these days)
backup program. I want to set it up on individual PC's to backup to a
mapped drive on server using a schedule function for after hours, unattended
backups.

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

TIA

We have a separate server which contains a file system with a separate,
secure folder per user. This filesystem is backed up to DAT every night. The
users know that they should/must maintain any/all key files directly on that
server and that any local files on their PCs are expendable.
It works well for us....and it's cheap!

the file, bad if they move a file to another folder because you get
duplicates).

3) When you enter a source and destination folder, don't end it with a
backslash "\", the program will add it automatically.

4) The program will create a log of all files copied and note which
files couldn't be copied.

5) If you create a shortcut to the program, for the program field you
can add a time for the backup to occur "9:00:00 pm".

6) As is, no warranty, too bad, etc...

Rick,
You might want to do a little checking on an open source solution called
rsync.
It allows the backup from one computer to another, but takes the "only
changed files" to the next level.
After the initial copy, each time you rsync again, it looks at each file and
only transfers the part of the file that has changed. This allows the
backups to be done very quickly and use very little bandwidth. I will be
using this shortly for offsite backups. Instead of taking the tape home, I
will rsync via a VPN connection. I will be using a Linksys NSLU2 for the
task (about $80 + USB Drive), but it can be done via any box (Windows or
Linux) for free.
Good luck,
Aaron Hoyt

Couple of notes:

1) First time you run the program it will give you an error - don't
worry about it (need to fix that one of these days).

2) If the user deletes the local file, the program will not delete the
destination copy (this is good and bad - good if they want to recover
the file, bad if they move a file to another folder because you get
duplicates).

Rather than backup the users local data to the server cant you map a
"Home"
drive for the users to store data directly on the server? This way you
only
have one machine to worry about rather than several.

How about robocopy?

How about using a script to copy files over. It may be slow but

What OS do you have on the client PC's? The built in backup program in
Win2000 will do what you want.

We have a separate server which contains a file system with a separate,
secure folder per user. This filesystem is backed up to DAT every night.
The
users know that they should/must maintain any/all key files directly on
that
server and that any local files on their PCs are expendable.
It works well for us....and it's cheap!

Gang of over 1000:

Is anyone using/aware of a free (our budget is zero spending these days)
backup program. I want to set it up on individual PC's to backup to a
mapped drive on server using a schedule function for after hours,
unattended
backups.

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.
