[OT] IDE/ATA Disk to USB Adapter

Todd -

I bought a CablesToGo "USB2.0 to IDE or SATA Drive Adapter" model
#30504. Here's a link:
http://www.accesspointe.com/appl/catalog/productdetail.aspx?productid=83
5887

Looks like the list price at EnPointe is $25 - since EnPointe is my
regular VAR, I'm sure I paid less than $25, so contact your favorite VAR
and see if they carry it.

I love this device. Works with laptop drives, desktop drives, SATA
drives, and I was even able to take an IDE CD-R/W drive from an old
desktop and connect it to another computer via USB and still burn disks
with it! This thing has saved the day many times over, but $90 for a
device like this would be ridiculously high.

Hardware question for the techies....I'm tired of trying to hook hard
drives from dead PCs into another PC to recover data. I know there are
adapters and cables that can turn an old drive into a big (size wise)
USB drive. Anyone have any favorites to recommend? I am looking at one
form Cables to Go for about $90. The convenience would be well worth the
cost but if there is something as good but less I would like to look at
it too.
Thanks,

Yes, $90 is way too much.

This is one of the ones I have and use all the time. Cost me $25 when I bought
it, but well worth it. I like this style a little bit more since it is all one
piece, my other ones have a USB cord that plugs into it. They do come with an
external power supply you need to use for 3.5" drives, but 2.5" are small enough
to be powered via the USB alone.

So much easier to just pull out someone's HD out of a laptop and connect it to
their new one to transfer their files, or to take the old drive out of the
desktop on its way to be recycled and then copy everything directly to the new
desktop.

I would only use it for temporary use, not for regular use of a drive. If you
want to use a drive for permanent external USB then just buy an enclosure for
it.

Todd, You don't have to spend that much.
You want something like this:

For many years, my IT toolbox consisted of a phillips screwdriver and a straightened out paper clip.
Last few years, I have a third tool, my ide to usb converter, lol.

I bought two of these off Ebay for $3.50/ea. Took a little over 2 weeks
to mail from Hong Kong. Still need a power source for the drive, and I
haven't actually tried using the things yet. Has plugs for 3.5" 40 pin
ATA, smalller size notebook ATA and SATA.
