OT - License Control Software for Terminal

Couldn't agree more. Running an application on a terminal vs. a pc does not
eliminate the licensing requirement. There is just no magical thin client
free lunch.

Brian,

That's a big 10-4.

You need TS licenses for EVERY possible user. As in, if your intention is
to install TS on 20 clients but only have 10 linked at any given time you
still need 20 licenses. AND, for every MS product installed on your
Terminal Server you will need 20 client licenses to boot.

When you do the math TS can be really expensive.

On the other hand ... you could setup 2 or 3 'Standard' PC's in your server
room with PcAnywhere on them and then install as many clients as you want
and TOTALLY side step the MS issue. Of course you have to purchase
PcAnywhere ( 2 or 3 hosts ) plus ( x number of clients ). Or check out VNC
(?), a freebie PcAnywhere alternative.

Given how cheap PC's have become ( $ 350 for a used DELL tower - P500 on
EBAY ). You could purchase 10 PC's for under $ 4,000 and setup a bank of TS
"type" servers for older machines or remote users for allot less $$$ then a
TS license plus a TS-grade server plus a pile of MS licenses ...

Just a thought ...

You mean if we have ten TS users, and Office is installed on the server, we
need 10 Office licenses? I'll have to check on that. Sounds like MS already
saw the loophole we were thinking of here.

Now I do know that we need a client access license for each TS user. Plus it
was actually non-MS programs that I was thinking of installing. I'll still
have to check it out.

Thanks
Brian

I'm pondering such an option. Is there a cost difference between a terminal
server license and a full product license?

2 cents:

VNC is great. I use it to work on most workstations here. And of course,
free. And easy to use. Search on VNC - I can't remember the web site.
