OT-McAfee auto dat file update setup

Ann,

Here's my setup. It's not the best. It certainly isn't elegant, but it
works.

I have VirusScan 4.5.1 set up on my workstation. With it comes VirusScan
Console.
In VirusScan Console is a task labeled Mirror. I have this set up to mirror
the McAfee update site. Every morning at 1:30am my computer connects and
synchronizes my directory with the McAfee directory. Only my machine has to
connect with the outside world. I use DSL but you could do this manually
with a dialup. After the download I have a scheduled task that copies
everything in that directory to another directory on my file server. This
step probably isn't necessary but I really don't like doing a share on my
workstation. There isn't an equivalent program in NetShield and the mirror
task won't work with a network share or mapped drive. It has to be a local
drive and directory.

In ePolicy Orchestrator I have a task to update all workstations. Each
workstation checks the local directory on the file server for updates every
morning at 9:00am. I picked that time because that's when everyone goes on
break. No one is using a computer then! They don't even notice. If new
files are there they download and install them. No running around. You can
do it all from ePolicy. I have VirusScan on every workstation and data
collection terminal.

You are welcome to contact me off-list if you have any questions.

I'm looking for the best way to setup McAfee in order for
the dat file updates to be as automatic as possible. We just
upgraded to McAfee SVS45E with ePolicy Orchestrator. I've been
trying to read literature between inturruptions, but would also like
some hands-on input. This will be loaded on the servers NT4 and
Novell 4.11, and on aprx 30 Win98 workstations. (I have been
removing virus scan from the 20 shop workstations since the floppy
and CD drives are locked and no internet or email is available to
them). You should know that all we have is a dialup internet
connection so I have to manually download the dat files. Here's what
I have in mind...
1) Daily download of dat files from website
2) Update McAfee with dat files on the 2 servers
3) Copy dat files for workstations onto a network drive/folder that
all users have access to
4) In advance: setup the Novell Organization login script to copy
this dat file to the root of C on whatever workstation the user is
logging into (needs to be able to respond to the file being over
written)
5) In advance: setup McAfee on each workstation to update the dat
file at startup using the path to the root of C

I hope this is understandable. I'm sure you guys have found a way to
set up so that you are not having to run around to each PC each
time. Also, if I'm not mistaken, you are suppose to exclude the
Vatage database from the scan. Is this correct? I need to come in
this weekend or next to set this all up, and I would like to have a
good plan in place ahead of time. All input is apprecialted on or
off list. Thanks!! Ann Harrell, amfab@...
