Terry,
MDaemon is what we are using for our in-house email system. We don't use
Outlook email We use Outlook Express), but it has worked faithfully for the
past 3+ years. I believe we just upgraded to the latest version. It is not
my area of expertise (someone else maintains it in-house here). You're just
up the road ... if you'd like to stop by and take a look sometime, feel
free.

Anyone ever heard of a product called "Mdaemon" www.deerfield.com ? How
reliable is it? Does it do what the web site says it will? How difficult
is it to configure/support? Anything else you can think of.

Terry,

Go here:

http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search

and search on keywords "mdaemon" and "deerfield". You should get
enough feedback to make a more informed decision.

FWIW, we use NTMail (www.gordano.com); there are also SLMail
(www.seattlelab.com), IMail (www.ipswitch.ca) and CommuniGate
(www.stalker.com) in the real-company real-support marketplace.

Looks like a nice e-mail server, quite a bit less costly then exchange. The
ability to add e-mail scanning at such a reasonable price is attractive.
Looks like it supports the latest industry-wide standards, and has a decent
support site with a user forum
http://forum1.deerfield.com/~mdaemon/guests

It also has a documented API which allows programmers to write applications
that interface with it.

From reading the messages in the forum, it would sound like there are
configuration issues, and it may not be 100% compatible with outlook's way
of sending messages. One user suggests that it is corrupting certain e-mail
messages.

My take is that the lesser purchase cost might possibly be offset by
increased in-house support costs (such as would probably be the case with
linux in our particular IT department).

For one specifically looking for a non-microsoft option, MDaemon looks quite
viable, but I would suggest looking also into Lotus Domino and some of the
other mail servers that have a broader client base.

We use exchange, and its been pretty stable, running side by side vantage on
the same server.

Thanks, Todd. Those were my initial thoughts, too but I didn't want to put
any preconceived ideas into anyone's head. The reason I'm asking is because
another outfit of which we're 50% ownership is running it and now they want
me to take over their IT support.

If your looking for a good e-mail server check out www.stalker.com they
have a product called Communigate Pro. We purchased it at the end of last

good with Outlook.

I used Mdaemon in the past, it is not quite as complicated as Exchange, but
it is more sophisticated (and therefore complicated) then most other e-mail
server packages. It works great once you have it setup, though. It seemed to
be stable. My guess, though, is that it is an overkill for most companies on
this list, and for those for whom it is not already own Exchange.

We have been running MDaemon 3.0 for a couple of years. Runs without ever
locking up or needing a reboot on P200/64MB NT4.0 workstation. We used
Outlook as the client, supports POP and IMAP and HTTP. IMAP is great for
your road warriers as it allows them to just get the headers and selectively
download. It has lots of featues and no doubt the new versions are even
better. About the only thing I miss from something like Exchange is all the
collaborative things (eg public folders, viewing other people's schedules,
delegate access, etc).

Very easy to manage (eg accounts, groups, retry / fail queues, filters, etc)
... I use VNC to remote control, but I believe it does come with other
features to do remote administration (eg HTTP / SMTP).
