OT - Networking CNC Equipment Question

Darren,
We have done this in our plant with good success. We purchased a multi-port
CAT 5 hub from MOXA and purchased software called Xpert DNC. You only need
to connect 4 wires for each cable, CAT 5 on one end and 25 pin RS-232 on the
other with 2 jumpers. There are several wiring resource guides on the
internet for the CAT 5 stuff and your machine manuals should tell you what
is what on that end. We now call up programs from the machine and send
edited programs back to the PC without anyone leaving there machine. The
software caches the program when sent back to the PC in a separate folder
and has a compare feature so you can verify what has changed in a program
before it is saved so as not to overwrite something you do not want. You can
also set it up to monitor the machines (cycle time, when running, when idle,
etc...) from the PC if you like.
Let me know if this helps.

Hi Darren,

What software are you required to use?
CNC machines may require a special software package to talk to the tool.
If this is the case can it talk through multiple com ports (ie
com1,com2, etc)
I would recommend checking out blackbox at blackbox.com.

Let me know what you find.

Thanks,

We are currently using an older 700 MHZ P3 computer running W98 SE. We
use a combination of a Rocketport serial expansion board (older way of
doing things) and some serial hubs which run across ethernet (Cat5)
cable. It is our intention to upgrade the PC to a newer one in the not
too distant future and use only the serial hubs across the network.

The software also comes with a function that allows you to compare the
original program with a modified one. The differences in machine code
show up in different colors making it real easy to see what changed.
This has been useful on occasion.

If you would like to discuss this further, contact me offline and maybe
we can connect via phone.

We just purchased and setup a DNC system from Refresh Your Memory, Inc.
www.rym.com. The price was right and it's really easy to use. Basically
purchased some Quatech ThinQ boxes ($800 each) that hang from the network,
wired in the serial communications from the CNC Controllers to the boxes.
(each box runs 8 controllers) Loaded an old PIII with their software. The
shop Super queues up the CNC programs for each machine and there set. Any
changes can be saved back to the "server" and the programmer can allow that
to update the code file if he wishes.

RYM gave us the communication parameters for all our controllers, we have
several different types and it all worked the first try. Very good company
on the implementation and support level. They can also turn key this for
you, but we wired it in ourselves.

Subject: [Vantage] OT - Networking CNC Equipment Question

Researching the most economical way to network all of our CNC mills and
Lathes to one computer to send programs from. Has anyone done this that
could provide some insight? Most of our mills are Fadal's.

Thanks,
