OT: New Server

If anybody is pricing out an IBM, you should know that they have a
special deal with CDW to price match any Dell. I like the machines from
both companies. More and more, I make my hardware / software decisions
based on Linux support and, as of today, IBM is winning at that ;).

I am considering a new Vantage Server
My current configuration is a HP NetServer LH 3000 and I will NEVER Have
another one
It was purchased 2-2001 and has had everything replaced plus hard drives
replaced about 4 times

Anyway I got a quote from Dell
When I presented it to my General Manager he was like
How do you feel about Dell's Servers? Meaning haven't they had problems
with their servers in the past?
I said no as far as I was concerned Dell was the way to go as they had a
4 hour response warranty available
Plus I reminded him nothing could be worse than what we have already
experienced with our HP server.

So what are you guys running and you that are running Dell Servers have
you had any problems?

I appreciate it!

I am running 9 Dell servers in my organization and couldn't be happier(knock on wood). Impeccable reliability, excellent support, price cannot be beat. What more do you need?

We have two dell servers here. One is three years old, the other four.
We've never had an ounce of trouble with them. I have always received
excellent service from their server support group.

Excellent as far as I'm concerned...

Jim,

We are currently running a dell server, Power Edge 2650 - this has been
running flawlessly the past two years. The first two weeks we had the
server the power button broke (possibly our fault - someone used a pen
to turn on and off and pushed too hard) Anyways - Dell was at her
facility in two hours and replaced it - no question asked!

2 Dell 2300 servers ... 5.5 years old ... still running

1 Dell 1300 server which melted down at 4 years old.

Excellent machines at a terrific price with outstanding service.

I'm not sure I buy into the Dell servers from 1600 down but from the 2600
power edge on up they're nice machines.

DELL ROCKS! As far as servers and problems go ... We have 4300 and ZERO
problems with it and been running it for 4 years ... HOWEVER, Dell support
has really gone south. Just to warn you, they outsource their support now
(hence 24/7 support) and no one seems to know what they are talking about.
I wanted to upgrade some firmware drivers and I talked to 3 different tech
people there (server tech people) and each one gave me a different driver
saying any other driver used would make my server inoperable.

SO, servers, great; customer support, bad.

Gateway recently changed their servers to something decent now, so they're
not using ALR equipment any longer (BOUT TIME). From my experience the NEW
gateway servers are extremely reliable and they have their own support which
is awesome! Whenever I call Gateway support, I'm always very happy after
hanging up with them and I feel they went above and beyond the necessary
support requirements to get my issues fixed (24/7 support as well).

So as we are also in the process of finding a new server, those two are the
ones I'm highly looking at.

HP and Compaq, I've never used yet but I do hear they are very popular, so
I'm considering them, but good to know your experience with the HPs ...
Thanks.

Also considering IBM, but need lots of $$$$ there, and I've never used those
either, not sure how their support is.

Personally, all I want is a server that runs fine with a phone number
attached to it for me to call up someone whenever I want to hold my hand.
I'll keep dreaming, but actually I believe Gateway has achieved this the
best for me so far ... In my experience.

Jessee Holmes
Stremel Manufacturing Company

P.S. There's always Apple! :D

We have a number of Dell servers on site and apart from a DLT tape drive
failure have never had any problems with any of them. In our experience
they make servers you can rely on.

Paul.

We are 100% Compaq. The only problem we had in the past 4 years has been
a RaidTec controller for some hot swap drives (Compaq 3000). Had to replace
it,
but we received the controller via air the next morning. For us, they've
been very reliable.
I re-boot the vantage server (ML370) only when I apply a patch......about
every 3 - 4 months.

James,

Dell... period. We have a Poweredge 2300 5 yr old and a Poweredge 2450 2.5
yr old. Replaced a drive starting to go bad in the 2450, and the tape drive
is a little flaky. But otherwise you don't even know they're there.
Reboots only for setting changes and patches. Their tech support is a
lifesaver. I can't emphasize that enough. And they do have a reasonably
good sales rep structure set up. Their web site has mucho helpful
information. Ordering is generally painless. And the little extra I pay is
more than made up by the time I save. I have put in 35 new Dell
workstations and 1 new Dell server in the past 3 years since starting this
network. The only way to go, unless you're looking for unnecessary work to
give you something to do.

As far as I'm concerned, I'll never own anything but Dell. We purchased a
Dell server a year ago (originally ordered from Compaq/HP, but after 8 weeks
and no server, we ordered from Dell) and have not had one problem. Their
desktops are great as well! We ordered 6 generic PC's about 2 years ago and
have had nothing but trouble. Ordered 2 Dell's earlier this year and have
had zero problems.

I definitely recommend Dell PowerEdge servers. Another good option
is IBM Netfinity. I used to support over 200 NT Servers at a large
company, and we bought nothing but Dell. After a merger, we acquired
a bunch of IBM Netfinities, and they became the dominant platform.

Compaq servers are nice until you have to upgrade them. Unless
things have changed over the past year or two, all of the hardware is
proprietary, and they can be a pain to upgrade or rebuild. Dell
PowerEdge & IBM Netfinity servers are easy to work on due to great
case designs, non-proprietary hardware, and they are very reliable
servers.

Just thought I'd chime in. Servers/Workstations are Kitty Boxes (my own
label). All built by my own hands, supervised severely by three cats
(well there was the fur issue). I've never had hardware issues, could
guarantee consistency, and cost is about half of name brand units.

We chose Gateway.

I am an old Dell guy, and we just bought 6 New Servers from Gateway.

I agree with everything said below by Jesse. All we got from Dell was,
"well I will find out about your Tech questions, but what do we need to do
to put you in a Dell today". Gateway put a tech right on and went over and
above.

My consultant says:

". I really have disliked the communication between Dell and myself.

The only thing Dell has hanging over Gateway is their reputation. As you
know I have encountered situations where I have needed support from all the
major vendors from time to time. In those situations Dell & Gateway have
always come through. Dell support is more the "follow the dots" type of
support - which typically takes longer and is less flexible. Gateway
support has been more flexible in resolving issues that have cropped up.

With Gateway's 90-day satisfaction guarantee we will have the opportunity to
put the equipment through its paces. Support from either vendor should be
nothing more then parts replacement.

Unless something crops up - my recommendation is to go with the Gateway
products. I prefer their case designs - they have been less "Chinese Puzzle
Box" like then the Dells."

I condensed all of his comments. We chose Gateway and time will tell.

My unprofessional opinion " All of this stuff is the same (produced on an
Island by barefoot children, most likely a Kathy Lee company) with different
stickers on them.

I question Dell's current support methodology.

Dan,

My experiences with Gateway support a few years ago pushed me to Dell
systems...It's weird how my dealings have been just the reverse of what you
have said. lol. Maybe Gateway woke up and realized what made them strong
prior to Dell...customer support. I hope so.

Did I mention, that Dell also only has a 3 year warranty ... Whereas Gateway
has a 5 year warranty? Although, I believe you can request a 5 year from
Dell but it will cost you.
