Good Friday to all! I have 18 old workstations, HP Pentium 75, that
I would like to sell, trade, or donate to a good cause. They do not
come with mice, keyboards or power cords and the hard drives have
been removed. Other than that, they are in good shape to my
knowledge. Any ideas? Also, what is the best way to recycle
workstations and monitors that are too outdated or broken?? Thanks
for your help! Ann, AMFAB
Plan A.
Employee blind bid type auction.
Plan B. When every employee has a basement full of old computer junk.
Donate to local school, church, etc...
Plan C.
Recycle. Send to local Computer Recycler with proper state and local
permits.

I currently pay 17$ per monitor and then .38 cents per pound at a local
recycler. For a couple of hundred dollars I can at least say I did the right
thing.

Also look into the Manufacturers, Dell, IBM, Compaq, etc... have programs
where you UPS the stuff back to them for a fee. Most have a $75 - $100
minimum and a price of $25 - $30 per PC. You have to also pay shipping fees.

I've found that these old workstations make wonderful boat anchors.

Ann,

A P75 without the hard drive, mouse, keyboard or monitor? I would feel
guilty even trying to give them away :) Junk them!

I don't know about that... I have put much less useful/functional things out
by the bulletin board on our shop floor with a "free to good home" sign on
them and they have gone quickly.

Ann,

I would try two places.

1) A local computer shop that may use old pieces and parts to donate to
schools or underprivileged groups. Yea, a p75 may be junk to most heavy
computer users, but to a kid with nothing it would be nice.

2) A recycle shop. The metal and gold in all those machines might be
worth the cost a local recycling business might charge to come and take
it off your hands. If you go this route, be sure you tell them it's an
all or nothing deal, they can't come and pick and choose.

I didn't mean to offend anyone, but to a kid with nothing, they still have
nothing. To get a functional machine, they need to put in at least $40 for
a hard drive, $100 for a monitor, and another $50 for a keyboard and mouse
(if they go el cheepo). What do they have when they're done? A P75. They
can have 10 times the system for an additional $100 (PIII). It isn't worth
it to take these systems. I think the employees that do take them don't
understand what they're getting.

I agree with what Chris is saying about the cost for a P75. Too much money.
As far as employees go, I've seen then argue over who gets the 386 that used
to be a server. You know how the saying goes. One mans trash is another
mans treasure.

Without a hard drive - These would make great routers for getting on
the network
I have several locations that I have worked with (outside in my
consulting business) where I have used Old 486 machines (Pentium
class works better if they have PCI slots)
8 megs of ram and a floppy, network card and possible internal or
external modem and boom your network is on the internet
If the machine looses power, boots back up onto floppy
it works EXCELLENT
Its also a DHCP Server and printer server, web server etc
AND RUNS OFF OF 1 FLOPPY Diskette

What is it?

check out www.freesco.org

I am telling you this is great stuff
