I agree, SSH is a killer tool. I use it for all kinds of things. When
dealing with client data upload issues, I find it much better however, to
simply direct them to the FTP server where they can upload their files. I
don't have to relay any special instructions, simply "just FTP your stuff to
x address using this username and this password". FTP is insecure, but
setup correctly it can be a minimal risk. Especially if you properly chroot
users into their directory.

Michael,
Something else you might want to check out under Linux is just using pure
SSH to transfer files. It is much more secure than FTP. All you need to do
is create the user and give them SSH access. Now find a good SCP client:
For Windows use WinSCP: http://winscp.sourceforge.net/eng/
For Linux / Mac use gFTP (don't let the name fool you): http://www.gftp.org/
SSH is such a killer tool - ultimately it has become the *only* port we
leave open through the router. Once you authenticate through SSH, you can
tunnel to any other port to any other system on your network.
