[OT] Setting up an FTP site

I agree, SSH is a killer tool. I use it for all kinds of things. When
dealing with client data upload issues, I find it much better however, to
simply direct them to the FTP server where they can upload their files. I
don't have to relay any special instructions, simply "just FTP your stuff to
x address using this username and this password". FTP is insecure, but
setup correctly it can be a minimal risk. Especially if you properly chroot
users into their directory.

Michael,

Something else you might want to check out under Linux is just using pure
SSH to transfer files. It is much more secure than FTP. All you need to do
is create the user and give them SSH access. Now find a good SCP client:

For Windows use WinSCP: http://winscp.sourceforge.net/eng/
For Linux / Mac use gFTP (don't let the name fool you): http://www.gftp.org/

SSH is such a killer tool - ultimately it has become the *only* port we
leave open through the router. Once you authenticate through SSH, you can
tunnel to any other port to any other system on your network.

Big hot issue today. Major customer demands that only way they will send enginerring doc and drawings is via secure FTP site that we must set up. I have no clue how to do this. Any pointers? We do not host our own web site but rather it is hosted remotely (Hostcentric). I am not sure how they are setup for allowing someone to log-in and load files in a private area. Or even if this is secure enough for the customer. Is it possible to setup a seperate server here just for FTP use and point access via our hosted web site to the IP address for it?

Any hints (suitable for a FTP dummy) would be much appreciated.

Hi Todd,
Our local ISP setup an FTP site for us with username and password for the
same reason you state. Email's can only handle about 1MB before they clog
up the mail server systems. The FTP allows large file transfers, plus the
advantage of storage space (archive). Make sure you reserve enough space
from the ISP for this purpose. We have 400MB+ for ours in case we upload
our Vantage database. It's about that size zipped up.

Todd,
I think we set up two FTP sites. One for general things that aren't a
big risk if someone grabbed them (although it is still passworded), then
another site specifically for one of our larger customers. The customer has
the username and password also. They contact us by email or phone when a
file is available and then we promptly remove it from the Site. This
verifies that we got it and removes "tracks".

Assuming you have a full-time Internet connection, I'd setup a dedicated
server on an old clunker PC outside your firewall. FreeBSD or Linux are
free and fast, include ftp and all the other standard Internet servers, and
will even run on a '486. If you prefer to stick with windoze, Vermillion
FTPd from http://www.arcanesoft.com is share-ware (~$80) that runs on
Win95 and up.

You can do it with folders or with perms. On our upload folder we give
write, modify, and list permissions. They do not have read permissions.
All customers can see the files, but cannot read them.

Todd,

I was looking at all the security stuff for our FTP site. Seems the
simplist way out is Winzip the files with password protection. Each person
who puts one out there gives that unique password to whoever is supposed to
pick up the file. That way, no confusion. A tiny bit of work on each
user's part eliminates a whole lot of work on the administrator's part and
still provides an acceptable measure of security.

Users have been instructed to delete their files from the FTP site after 3
days - plenty of time for their contact to pick up the file from the site.
A couple of times a week I spend 2 minutes and check the site and delete
files over 3 days old. The FTP site is a very simple way of getting
large-size info where you want it. Our email size limit for users is 1M -
everybody else uses the FTP site.

As usual, you can contact me if any questions.

I second this notion. We have a FTP repository that is built on a similar
configuration. Old hardware running Linux (Debian\GNU "Woody" w/ proftpd).
We give access to individuals on the outside by creating a username and
password for them and locking them down (chroot) in the directory of our
choosing. We can allow/disallow uploads/downloads. The system is cheep,
robust, and highly configurable.

Don't let Linux scare you. It's cake. If your interested in learning
Debian (www.debian.org) you can get help in a similar fashion to this
Vantage group with Debian-user lists.

If your interested I can give more details.

Michael,

Something else you might want to check out under Linux is just using
pure SSH to transfer files. It is much more secure than FTP. All you
need to do is create the user and give them SSH access. Now find a good
SCP client:

For Windows use WinSCP: http://winscp.sourceforge.net/eng/
For Linux / Mac use gFTP (don't let the name fool you):
http://www.gftp.org/

SSH is such a killer tool - ultimately it has become the *only* port we
leave open through the router. Once you authenticate through SSH, you
can tunnel to any other port to any other system on your network.
