I've been asked to find software that verifies tool paths on our programs.
We use vericut on some pcs but we were looking for a less expensive option
for this new user to use on a basic level. Any suggestions would be
helpful.

Thanks

I would like to hear from any users of Citrix over a satellite connection...
I am thinking about hooking one of our engineers in the boonies up with a
satellite connection rather than his low speed dial up. The provider
(Earthlink/Direct TV) promises upload speeds of "up to" 60Kbs. Just
wondering what it is like in real life, and how Citrix deals with any
latency effects....

Thanks!

Paul
I've used satellite for both home and work, and its magnitudes of order
better than a dial up. I had very little trouble with connection. I was
VERY happy with Satellite until I ran up against their F.A.P. policy. (Fair
Access Policy) If you exceed 169 megabytes per hour your connection speed
is cut. Regular browsing and email kept you well inside that mark.
However, when I had 10 users browsing, and me downloading updates and such,
the FAP started raising its ugly head. There might be "business"
connections that allow more but not "home" connections. If you are looking
to purchase two way equipment I have such available for resale, I also have
One Way dialup equipment available for resale. If you do go sat, let me
know I could save you some equipment costs.

What satellite providers were you using, Shirley? Our company tried
Starband for a while, but I thought the lag wasn't good enough to move the
company to it (two way satellite). Did you have better luck with one-way
dialup or two-way satellite? Which seemed to work the best?

Thanks for your time,

Chris

We were with directway, and yes Lag is a problem. At home you'll die
everytime if you try anything like Unreal tournament, ( I always out ran the
bullets) At work the lag is too much for something like terminal server or
remote connections. I'm using the game analogy because it's a good measure,
you are pumping a lot of commands back and forth with loads of graphics,
plus the game servers give you latency times. With a sat UNREAL latency
would run between 500 and 1000 miliseconds, with something like Roadrunner
latency would be between 2 and 10 miliseconds. (I think I got the
milliseconds right). The two way was the better of the two both connection
types both WAY WAY WAY better than dialup. We looked at bang for buck, at
the time to get a connection on a land line at the same speed was $2,500 per
month for a leased line. (I don't think so) where as we had the same
connection speed for $69.00 a month. Then FAP started to rear its ugly head
about the time Roadrunner came down both home and company street. An even
faster connection for about the same money with no limit on traffic. In
their time and place, not bad choices, considering. Constraints on Two Way
is equipment cost (Just under $1000.00 I think now), two way requires FCC
trained techs to install. The direct way sat is about 1 to 3 degrees off of
a military sat. The military gets rather miffed when you start squirting
unexpected Microwaves at their sats. Which brings up, yes it is a Microwave
transmitter, don't be surprised to see a scorched birdy or two during the
summer. That means it has to go up high (on the roof, on a pole, somewhere
people can't easily be around) otherwise your Orville Redinbacher will pop
in your pocket.

I too checked into satellite and the sales person gave me all the wonders of
the speed but when I talked to one of their techs they said the connection
was great providing you weren't using something that required low latency.
The tech specifically told me Citrix and terminal servers were practically
useless. The tech was honest enough to talk me out of the gamble.

I found this quote from a satellite provider on the web:

"Applications that are affected by high latency may have problems. Satellite
latency in the range of 720ms - 1500 ms or more can be expected. Known
latency-affected applications include interactive gaming, VoIP, and most
non-TCP/IP applications: UDP is a protocol that cannot be accelerated
because it is not a connection-based protocol. NetBIOS is a LAN technology
that cannot be accelerated, and was not designed to function in a WAN
environment however it is sometimes used in this manner. NetBIOS will
function slowly over satellite. Drive-mapping is not supported. RDP (Citrix)
and RCP (Exchange) can also be slow over a satellite connection."

Thanks for all the replies, so far...

To clarify my enquiry; the guy who I am thinking about hooking up with the
Earthlink/Direct TV deal is literally in the middle of the desert in Nevada.
We were happy to get him just a simple phoneline. This line has a lot of
static problems, but I can still get him up on Ctrix, almost to the point
were he would be able to use Vantage.

The connection would only serve him, not an office with multiple users. I
wonder now how useless Citrix becomes. I know that with a normal dial up
connection Citrix, I still experience a type of lag, even with the speed
screens function tweaked to the max. How bad will it get? Will it start
dropping the connection, or will it freeze for a couple of seconds on every
other keystroke?

What I typically see with a high lag connection is the connection just
drops. It is not like the screen loads slow it just drops. Now granted the
session stays active so that when you log in you are where you left off but
you still get dropped all the time.

I am afraid the "Town" would object to his collection of military surplus
vehicles. Other than that fetish, he is a great engineer.
