[OT] Suggestions for Tracking Web Visitors?

Todd,

It will get the files right from the server, or it will work on files
that you've previously downloaded. I believe the Gold edition will
also download and archive the files for you.

have fun,
john

I've been looking into WebTrends to track the source of web site visitors. Mainly to try to identify possible bogus click thrus via paid placement. Other stats like pages visited would be nice. But WebTrends is a little pricey. Anyone happy with something else?

Hosted externally by Hostcentric. They suggested signing up for NetTracker ($10/mo) but I am not sure what that would provide. They also have some very basic reports and I can FTP the raw logs but nothing where I can easily compile repeat visits by unique visitor and then determine the actual source. Issue is with Overture paid placement - visits (and costs) have doubled over last 10 months but new customer activity has not. Worry is that there is some guy in India getting paid pennies for search & clicks to hammer up the volume.

Thanks,
-Todd C.

Todd,

Try this:

http://www.mach5.com/products/analyzer/

It's very capable and blows WebTrends out of the water price-wise.
I've used it for several years to slice and dice raw logs (apache and
IIS). There are three editions, but I would recommend the Gold edition
for your needs. OTOH, if you're into Linux, there are several very
competent open source tools that will do the same job.

have fun,
john

Thanks a bunch. That looks like it might be sufficient for what I need (can determine domain and geographic location of visitors) and more. One quesiton....does it work off of log files that I have to download from the hosting service or can I give it the address and have it access the logs directly? I suspect the logs are Apache (the server is Unix with FrontPage extensions) but it could be IIS logs since they also host sites on Windows servers.

But under $200 I can "authorize" on my own - over a grand for WebTrends would have required CEO approval.

Thanks again,
-Todd C.

Take a look at www.statcounter.com - you can view the last 100 hits for
free - what I like is that is shows the referring page if there is one - so
I can actually see the parameters entered into a Google search that were
used to find our website.
