[ot] vmware

Has anyone had any experience with the VMWARE server product in a
production environment? Let me know, off list.

I'm using VMWare workstation, and I love it.

For anyone interested in dual-booting any software, including Linux,
go to http://www.vmware.com The workstation product lists for just
over $300, and allows you to create a test network of up to 7
simultaneous virtual machines on one computer. I currently have
windows 2000 Professional, Windows .NET server, and windows 2k server
all running simultaneously on one box.

The software allows me to have a test client, a test server, and a
development workstation, without purchasing another workstation.
In fact, I was able to get rid of my test server as soon as I
installed the product.

Happy Holidays,

Thaddeus

Definitely Linux, as long as Epicor will support it...

> How many companies are planning to move to a Linux server ... ?

Someone will have to articulate a better reason than "It's not
Microsoft".

We have 12 servers - 5 running Linux, 4 running WinNT, and 3 running
Win2K. Across all servers, our unplanned downtime in the last year was
less than six hours.

Our Linux servers are great at what they do - firewalling and file &
print for specific workgroups. Our NT/2K boxes are also good at what
they do - domain authentication, email, enterprise file & print and
databases.

Cost-wise, the OS & CALs are a mere fraction of the dollars we spend on
IT. The support is there when we need it. The stability is there (down
two hours on one Linux box, three hours on a 2K box, the rest
scattered), no daily or weekly or otherwise planned reboots.

Microsoft has broader platform and solution support options - with
thousands of partners to choose from. Linux enjoys a wealth of tools,
but to be frank the support is disjointed. That said, my first resource
for unanswered Windows or Linux questions is Deja.

On the client side, Windows is where we will stay for the forseeable
future. There is currently no equivalent in Linux to the 2D & 3D
solution suite in use in our engineering department. We make heavy use
of VB coding (not scripting) in our Office suite - OpenOffice (which I
run on RedHat 7.3 in VMWare on my laptop) does not offer similar
functionality.

In short, we use what is best for the task at hand. I am not a
"disciple" of any OS. Objectivity is king.

have fun,
john

I'm ready as soon as it's officially supported. However, I would
rather run FreeBSD. It's much mmore stable in my experience, and has
much better documentation than any Linux distro I have seen.

Just a thought, I would like to suggest that future surveys be
handled through the "polls" section of the group. That way everyone
can sort of see the data instead of just replying with "me too"
responses.
This way, if someone is researching something, it is more
presentable to them.

I turned my personal workstation (Dell Dimension 4300) into a dual boot RH 8
/ Win2K Pro. Talk about serious eyecandy with RH 8. Already in the first
few days I had a lot of "Can-you-get-me-one-of-those" remarks, just about
the desktop. Like Mike stated, install was a breeze. The citrix client is
pretty smooth as well, and allows me to switch back more quickly than
rebooting, in case I need to use a MS application.

Even though it isn't ready to replace MS desktops on the workfloor, the new
GUI is definitely a big step in that direction....

2 cents worth.

Just installed Red Hat v. 8 on an older Dell PC. Installation was as easy
if
not easier than a typical Windows install. Even automatically detected and
configured my cable modem using USB cable.
