OT Web Telephony

We are owned by a company in Holland and several people in our office
use it to communicate with the office in Holland. Computer to computer
communication is free and calling a land line in most of Europe is only
2.4 cents a minute I think. It can definitely save money however it is
better suited to personal use. However they are creating some tools to
try to make it more suitable for small businesses like us. One feature
is the "Control Panel" to group all of your users together and allocate
funds to a user as they need. If you are not calling computer to
computer you have to have purchased credit a head of time to make calls
to landlines. You definitely want to aware of the rates because though
calling a land line in Holland is cheap, calling a cell phone in Holland
is not, 25 cents a minute or something.

I use it at home occasionally and I think the sound quality is pretty
good.

Good luck

Mark

Our Sales VP just returned from Europe, Italy to be precise, and when he
was communicating back to our office he was using a service called
"Skype". Apparently Skype allows unlimited international calling over a
computer or wi-fi, it also has IM, and conference calling included in
the service. I checked there site and found out that they do offer
service in the US, so before I shoot myself in the foot I would like to
ask:

If anyone here uses or knows some who uses Skype ?

Would you recommend it to anyone else besides your enemies?

Our China rep uses it all the time to call here and twisted our President's arm to have us install it. After a bit of checking (as you are doing) I conceeded to try it. We set up two PCs here with it and got special headphone/microphone sets...did a test...and then never used it. Not for reasons of the service...just lack of need I think. Another hurry up and get us this NOW!!! and then forget about it project.

While checking I had some security concerns because in theory it punches a sizable hole in the firewall but this was somewhat relieved when they were bought by e-Bay, so somewhat more "respectable" in my eyes. They have made a HUGE push to tell people they are not Spyware or Adware related and to address security issues.

Near as I can tell for international calling it is a decent enough service....and the price is right. If only we actually used it beyond the testing phase.

Gerard,

We have been using skype for about 2 years now I think. We have a
manufacturing plant in China, and use skype to talk back and forth. You
can get a skype in number where landlines can call you on your computer
or a skype out number where you can call out to landlines and
cellphones. They are changing their service for skype out starting
tomorrow I believe. You pay around $30 a year for unlimited skype out
calls to the US and maybe a few other countries. It is a great tool.. I
recommend it highly. There are others out there that do the same if not
more, but skype is one of the easiest to use.

Gerard,
I have used it for almost 3 years communication with friends in other
countries.
Now, I beleive Linksys has even made some equipment (small voip phones) that
interface with the Skype service.
Was a great alternative to high costs calls, especially for personal use.
Depending on the number of callers, frequency of calls, I would look at more
integrated voip solutions, but for a basic communication effort, it is very
good.
It has been at or near the top of geeks-lists for years now.

Thanks Chad,

I've been looking at the SkypeIn plan, looks pretty cool as
it allows you to possess up to ten numbers from ten different locations
around the world. That can be useful for us since we are setting up
distribution to several different Euro countries.

Also I'm assuming that if I have SkypeOut, people with regular land
lines will not be able to phone me, is that correct?

Skype in is for people on landlines to call you on your computer..
Skype out is for you to call landlines/cell phones from your computer.
