Outsource Payroll

I knew that eventually a patch would probably overwrite the code (we
had been warned about this when we bought Vantage), but management
still insisted on doing it. It just kind of surprised me that the
very next patch I installed overwrote it. Oh well...hopefully
eventually they'll make the check a Crystal form.

Just curious how many people are using Vantage to process payroll
versus using an outside payroll company.

Also, what outside payroll companies are people using and how has
your experience been with them.

We use Vantage payroll. We have 190 employees and run payroll weekly (a
union thing).

We use some minor elements of the payroll module, and we are leased
employees. IE Management "sold" us to another company which "leases" us
back to them. Theory being cost saving in Workers Comp other areas.
(unrealized cost savings I might add)

Ah, but our issue was the need for a person to run payroll and handle all the regulatory reporting. We used to figure that 1/2 of a person dedicated to payroll cost us $20K a year (pay, benefits, etc...). We switched to ADP (for 130 employees) 4 years ago and have been happy with it. I haven't looked at the costs lately but we figured then that our breakeven to do our own payroll processing would be somewhere closer to 200 employees.

Interesting, we use Vantage payroll, and run weekly. Although we don't have
a union situation. I am told our AR/AP person spends at most 5 or 6 hours
per week dealing with adjusting times, printing checks, folding checks and
everything else payroll for our 110-120 employees.
Not that I am trying to get anyone to change, but more to address the
original question of how we use payroll.
Our single biggest issue is the lack of a Crystal check keeping us from
modifying the placement of the address to match our banks checks and
envelope windows.

We use ADP. It works very well with Vantage. Our hours are accumulated and
adjusted in Vantage and then entered into ADP. I think the primary
advantages to a payroll service are that the service handles all the
compliance issues such as taxes (Fed, state, FUTA), garnishments, new hire
reporting and reporting to the government entities. It is hard for an
individual company to keep track of all the tax laws and compliance issues.
A payroll service will significantly reduce your risk of noncompliance with
laws. If you have a simple system in one state or can afford a dedicated
payroll person, you could probably use Vantage cost effectively. Having
said this, I think the Vantage payroll module works well, but it doesn't
provide the other services of a company dedicated to payroll processing and
compliance. You have to choose what is important and if you are willing to
pay for it.

Ouch. Feel a bit smacked there Alex. We do not spend 100% of our time on
payroll issues, but do keep up to date with the annual tax changes and
compliance issues. Granted we only have one out of state employee, but that
State sends us info just like Indiana does.

Thank you,
Yes I believe I am. I also started a request, and got them to group several
requests into one. This has been an issue since 3.0 for us, and I start at
least one thread to gain support annually. This was another such attempt.
Someday our numbers will be sufficient. :)

We use Vantage 5.1 payroll (used since 4.0 1999)
We find it very useful, since it ties to the data collection.

We also use Abra for tracking personnel reviews, and other records.

We also do our own payroll for about 225 employees using Data
Collection. It is a pretty simple process.

We have the same complaint that the check is not a Crystal Form. One
of the owners insisted that the check be modified. We had Epicor
custom programming modify the check for us just to have all of the
modifications "wiped out" in the next patch that was released. What
a waste of money!

Ryan, the Vantage patches will blindly overwrite any code that was put in
place of a standard Vantage program. I've never dealt with any products
from Custom Programming, but didn't they give you a copy of the mods on CD
or disk, or any instructions on how to deal with patches? I'd guess they
would also still have a copy at their place they could provide. Or at
least tell you which files to try to retrieve from a backup?

Custom Programming will has 'clauses' in their contract which state that patches can affect Custom programming and it may require additional $$ to keep the code current. They say you should always check with C.P. before installing a patch to see how it affects their code.

We did Custom Programming once, and won't do it again.
