Part average costs on made to order parts?

We are on Standard costing, but wouldn't the rollup in the Costing Workbench also update the average cost if you selected that for the costing method?  I know that the standard cost is updated on our parts which are made to order when we run it.

Can anyone explain to me if, or how the part costs for made to order parts can be populated in the part cost? I started asking questions in another thread, but instead of hijacking I thought I would answer the question here.

I ran the inventory WIP reconciliation report, but that didn't seem to populate any of the fields in parts that were made to order and didn't hit inventory.

Is there a setting somewhere to allow made to order parts to grab costs from jobs?

Any help would be appreciated.

If you are average cost when you setup a new part you can use the cost adjustment, avg mtl cost (or all of the fields) to establish a cost for that part

Parts that are purchased and average cost build their cost based on a weighted average every time you receive to stock. Manufactured parts that are made to stock update the average cost based on a weighted average when you receive to inventory. Manufactured parts that are made to order get their cost from the total job costs which becomes your cost of sales

Parts that are purchase direct never update the average cost, the cost is what is reflected when they are purchased to the job from the PO unit cost

So if we have parts that we use often, but are always made to order and are always part of a made to order job (so they are never made on their own, and never made to inventory) there will never be any costs automatically created by the system? Does that sound accurate?

The costs are there but they are in the job.  No costs roll to the part because the part is not received to inventory.

Yes that is correct. They are not average costed because they are specific to that job. If you put them in inventory they have to weighted cost unless you went to something like lot average.

Well that's just dumb.

I guess I'll just have to write a custom dashboard to get the average cost and DMT it back to the system.
