Part Numbering when using different paint colors

I don't see why just using revisions might not be the easiest.

I would like to hear how all of you are handling tracking different paint colors on parts. We normally paint our equipment (and replacement parts) a standard color but now we are being asked more frequently to use various other colors. To date, we were not tracking the paint as a material on the BOM but we are reviewing this as an option. We are a little concerned of where this will take us given the fact that our part database includes over 100,000 parts and the different color schemes could increase that number significantly. Can any of you tell me of other routes you may have taken (such as revisions or alternate methods) and list any downfalls of them?

Thanks,
Mike
Configurator owned?

If so, you can create your parts as configurable, when a customers orders
"HAT" you'll get the choice of Red, Blue, Pink

Only 1 Part Record per configured part

No, we don't own configurator.

ah :( sad, other option is do use a UD Form to maintain the colors

UD01 Set Key1=PartNum
Char01=Color

Bring in the UD table into Order Entry and let the CSR select the color
from the available list. It will require more coding cause you'll have to
implement in SO, Quote, Shipment, etc..

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Yes, I'm guessing that route could get a bit involved - when trying to pass the paint material through to get it on the job BOM and to make sure that historically we can track what color part went to the customer.
