Perspectives

I think that is an excellent idea. Can you spell tequila also? Trouble is,
the welcome reception doesn't always have actual tables. How about a sign
that says: Vantage One List Members. It could have a big red target on it!

You want to actually get o-o-r-g-a-n-i-z-z-e-d-a as a user community. I'm
not sure how to spell that.

I usually do and plan to again this year. For those from this yahoo group
going it would be nice to arrange for a meeting spot and put some faces to
the names. Any ideas? Maybe a table or two at lunch? Or see if we can get
a dedicated table at the Sunday evening Welcome Reception ? -Todd C.

At this short date, we cannot send anyone to the Perspectives customer
conference. Would appreciate a summarization of important information when
anyone from this group who attends returns.

Also, re Vantage 6.0 Knowledge Camp: We understand that there isn't an
opening until after the first of the year. Our implementation consultant is
working on it as we speak. I suppose this is pretty important before going
live. Have any of you implemented Vantage without this class?

Thanks,

Here is my take on Perspectives.

1. Crystal Run time license for distributing reports from with the
Vantage Menu structure is awesome. It will save us from having to
shell out big bucks for the Crystal Enterprise 10 Pro. I will
probably have to look into the VB distribution method that Jeremy
Leonard suggested to me a while ago, because I do have some Crystal
Reports that aren't Vantage Related that I won't be able to
distribute this way.

2. This is going to be a big upgrade. Allow a lot of time for
testing and training. Someone advised to treat it as a new
implementation.

3. Hardware requirements for servers and workstations are huge.
Contact tech support for help sizing your system. Ben Nixon is the
man in this area.

4. Dashboards look like a great replacement for some "Watchdog
Reports".

5. The amount of personalization and customization possible is
almost overwhelming. I can't wait to get my hands on it and see what
I can streamline and error proof for my users. I didn't make it to
this session, but there will be an Advanced Developer Module
available for those you really want to get into the code. Did anyone
attend that? Any comments?

6. Field level security is long overdue, but finally available.

7. DBF file dumps when you print a form will be replaced with XML
files that will contain a whole lot more fields, and the ability for
us to add fields to them. Thereby eliminating the need to use ODBC
and subreports to add fields to those documents. This is also the
reason that you should not use your 6.x copy of the forms, but rather
start with Epicors version and modify as necessary.

8. Epicor has some work to do yet before distribution. In almost
every lab and session I attended, it was mentioned that this or that
needed to be finished or fixed or added before the GA release.

Overall, I'm excited about the possibilities that V8 will bring, but
I don't see us be live on it before mid-late '05.

General comments. The weather wasn't that great. The food wasn't as
good as the other Perspectives I attended in Palm Springs but still
pretty good. Caesar's Palace was nice but expensive. I had a cold
the whole time so I didn't have much fun and didn't get to meet too
many people. Jim Abbott was a good Keynote speaker. The labs and
sessions were plentiful and run very well. I would rate my attending
a successful experience which would have been a lot better if I
wasn't sick.

Brian Stenglein
Clow Stamping Co.
I was going to write a recap for Perspectives too but Brian said it all already. I guess I would add (using his numbering):

2. Really huge upgrade....consider it like a brand new implementation. Get managment buy-off and support all the way. Plan to re-evaluate all business processes in light of new capabilities and customization potential.

3. Hardware requirements are still being worked out based on tweaking at the early adopter sites. The way I heard it described by Ben Nixon was that there are some memory "leak" issues with .Net they are working on with Microsoft and every time you load a screen it does not give back some of the memory space when the screen closes. So as they tested they kept having to escalate the memory requirements on the client - this may in the end be able to be scaled back. Stay tuned for updates.

4. Dashboards could easily replace 1/2 of our RB reports. Users can make their own fairly easily and they can be based on queries written for them (and validated for accuracy) so they don't have to deal with linking tables.

5. VB forms go away completely....but can be simulated by creating your own "tabs" and sheets - or else just put the new fields directly on regular sheets (forms).

8. Between the roughness around the edges, the hardware requirement vagueness and just plain magnitude of the task I don't see us going to 8.0 before January '06 at the earliest. By then some of the early glitches will be resolved. My hat's off to the early adopters.

Yup, the food was not as good. I skipped the "party" this year opting instead to use the $75 it would have cost to bring my wife to go to a show. A lot of people staying at The Flamingo across the street got sick with some sort of intestinal flu - they closed and sanitized over 200 rooms due to a major outbreak of what was probably the Norwalk virus. I think a bunch of Epicor people were staying over there. The weather was rainy and in the upper 50's low 60's all week. The slot machines were even colder. We thought Jim Abbott was excellent - my wife lost the use of her right arm 30 years ago and was amused by his experiences was well as inspired (and also dismayed that he gave up on golf, as she is trying to learn to swing one armed).

One organizational "brick-bat"....putting the Internet access PCs (for email) way in the back of the Hall of Solutions. This meant they were restricted to the hours the hall was open (not until 11am). That meant it was 1pm central time before I could check office email. No wireless access either (for various reasons). The PC pool should have been up front and accessable during all conference hours (7am to 5pm).

Does anyone have a decent document on how to setup ODBC on Vantage version
6.1. Progress 9.1D patch level 8...I think.

Do we have to purchase and license this from Progress?

Any insight would be appreciated. I'm on Vantage's support site right now,
getting basically nowhere.

I believe in 6.1 it is set up automatically.
If you use the explorertool.exe and get your setting right in the progress
explorer tool, you then only need configure the client.
That process involves (at the client machine):
Open "Data Sources (ODBC)"
Click on System DSN tab.
Click Add.
Choose "Merant 3.60..." driver.
Set Data source Name to "PROGRESS91D"
Set description to "Vantage 6.1"
Set Host Name to your Vantage server Name.
Set port number to 6150 for the live database.
Set the Database Name to "mfgsys"
Set the userID to "sysprogress"
Click on the Advanced Tab.
Set the Default Isolation Level to "Read Uncommitted".

Contact Epicor support for an ODBC setup package to set security and such.

Best of luck,
Aaron Hoyt
PS if you have a bunch of clients to setup, try exporting those ODBC parts
of the registry and installing them via a .reg file (this trick can make it
very fast to set up the clients exactly alike).

Hello,

We are new to Vantage and did not attend the Perspectives 2005 event.

I was wondering if anyone on this list had gone and would they be willing to share their experiences with me.
So far, the event sounds really interesting but there is no detailed information posted for the 2006 event yet.

I will send , off-list, email messages as attachments for comments I made after the last Perspectives. Plus some general insights on logistics for Las Vegas - since they said it would be there again next year. I vaguely recall being happy about a date slightly earlier in October - maybe we won't get rained out for 3rd year in a row. 2003 the weather was spectacular.

In a nut shell....Perspectives is the absolute best education "value" for Epicor products but you get from it what you put into it. You have to seek out other users and "network" actively.

Coming right up off-list. Also, please note that this year's Pespectives web site has an excellent (if somewhat unrealistic IHMO) guide to justifying attending. Some of their cost assumptions I belive were skewed a little.

I went to Perspectives in 2000 and I found it useful

- networking. What if you need to hire Vantage people in the future?? By gathering business cards you buy pass recruiters who are unlikely to find people with Vantage skills. You may also explore new consultant possibilities as Vendors and Consultants will be there schlepping for new clients

- the training classes are handy for people who are the super users. I found that looking at new modules or 3rd party modules with other people in the same position faciliated discussions. In a series of 1 hour classes you absorb more than you would in a 3 day course costing $1400

- you meet 3rd part vendors who may have a module even your sales person wouldn't have heard of. For most people they are interesting but for particular industries they could be answer to prayers

- you have an opportunity to have your voice heard by Epicor regarding changes you want made (although they'll probably ignore you)

- The evening events are only good if you know people so bring your partner and perhaps the Vantage user group should have a 'Getting to know you Session' so they can put faces to 'Email Addresses'

I live in Europe now so Perspectives is out of the question for me :(

I know there has been a lot of talk on Perspectives in the past, but I
need to know if it fits my needs and budget. We are on Vantage 6.0
now, going to 6.1 by the end of the year, and looking at going to 8.0
next year. I need all the information I can get on 8.0, using Crystal
Reports with Vantage 8.0, building dashboards, etc., etc. Would I be
better off spending money on training at Epicor (if any) or would
Perspectives combine enough training about converting to 8.0 with the
benefit of getting ideas from the various people. I know this is late,
but I need to know so I can book the trip if needed. Any suggestions
would be appreciated.
Perspectives is the best "bang for the buck" training... or at least the best initial exposure. A lot depends on your personal learning style. If you pick things up easily and can work you way up from a conceptual level on your own then the lab sessions are very good...although probably now filled as far as gettig hands onto a PC. They can't go into a lot of detail or answer a lot of questions and they move along pretty fast but I've found the exposure enough to get me started on a lot of things. Just knowing something CAN be done is often 80% of the road to actually doing it.

Even if you later need formal classroom training (or even web based) having seen it at Perspectives and played with it on your own system will make any class more relevant. And if you don't need several classes you'll quickly recover the cost of Perspectives as well as have had the product overview and roadmap info from which to make decisions about strategies for the future.

Perspectives also offers "real world" experience by talking to other users as well as a chance to talk to Epicor developers and support people. The past few years migrators from earleir versions have been scarce...far out numbered by "new" 8.x sites. I am hoping there is a lot more collective experience with migration this year.

Just my 2 cents...

Having been to perspectives many times in the past, I strongly recommend
perspectives, especially in a case like yours where you are planning to
upgrade to 8 within the year. Try to get into as many labs as you can -
NOW (they fill up fast) - and the 4-hour Sunday sessions they held last
year were GREAT (the one I took was great anyway). If you take as many
labs as you can and take one of the Sunday sessions, that alone will pay
for the cost of the trip. Not to mention the networking, info from
other users and all the other sessions where you can pick up information
or tidbits or even air your grievances / software issues to people that
can actually do something about it. With all the session they have,
chances are they will cover most of the things you are concerned about,
and if not, stop by the hall of solutions and ask questions. They will
try to get you an answer if they don't know.
