Physical Inventory - Counting WIP

We designate people to check work orders on the floor. We give them a
control paper that they only need to write the work order down. Then I
enter all the work orders on a spreadsheet. Then I have an access
database that pulls those work orders in and compares it to the work
orders that are open in Vantage. I get a list of work orders still open
in vantage but not inventoried. These work orders are investigated and
if it is found that they should be closed they are set up to be closed
in that month.

Is anyone using vantage 8 with Metaframe Presentation Server 4 or 4.5 on
a live production server? If so how does it perform and what is your
environment (Users, Ram, Hardware, etc..)? Also, does anyone have the
citrix server hardware/ram requirements for about 30 Vantage8 Users? I
am starting to look at Version 8 and wanted to prepare my Citrix box for
the upcoming vantage8 upgrade. The clients would be completely thin
(WYSE TERMINALS) across a WAN (T1). Any information would be greatly
appreciated...

We are not running live with 8.03, but are piloting. This seems to work
pretty well. We have a dual duo core processor server, with 6 GB RAM
(Windows Enterprise Edition 2003).

Live, we are running 6.1 with only about 15 clients connecting via ICA /
RDP to that particular server.

In fact, I operate on a PC with my desktop maintained by Citrix. This
also has some terrific advantages as far as getting access to my
environment from virtually anywhere. It also gives me first hand
experience from an user's perspective.

Hello,

We have an upcoming physical inventory, part of which will include the
counting of WIP.

Does anyone else count WIP during a physical? If so, how do you do so in
Vantage? There doesn't seem to be any mechanism for this.

Thanks,

Joe,

We have been doing this for the last few years. What I do is on the
morning of the count I print out the Work In Process report by job
number. Then each area gets inventory tickets for each job they have on
the floor. They report to on the ticket - job#, operation & quantity.
The only thing I do is verify that the job number being reported is on
the WIP report. If it is then I assume everything is correct. I only
investigate jobs that are on the report but no ticket or a ticket for a
job that is not on the report. I use to try to verify quantity but
that was so labor intensive it wasn't worth the effort.

We first try to clean up WIP. Where possible, we return parts not yet
consumed on the job back to stores. Thus, all WIP really is parts that
have been partially converted.

Also, we make sure that all parts that are finished have been received
into stores.

We also make sure that any open/completed jobs that should be closed are
closed.

Next comes the fun part. We print Production Detail Reports for all
open jobs. We walk the floor and make sure that we can find in process
parts at all stages of production. For us since much of what we
manufacture are very small parts, we're not doing an exact count but are
looking for counts that fit the "reasonable" category. For example, if
my production detail report shows that 75,000 pieces were completed at
stamping, I'll look for these parts at the current workcenter or at the
next. If I can find bins holding 73,500 that's close enough for me.
Your situation (auditors) may require tighter tolerances so be aware of
this.

Any anomalous findings or significant discrepancies between WIP and what
we find are noted on the Production Detail report and corrections are
made. These marked Production Detail reports then go into the audit
package along with the original count tags.

Hope this helps!

Mike
