Plasma Displays & Plant Schedule

Burn-in is a real hot topic right now. Most newer displays are less likely
to do this but they still have warnings all over the place because it can
happen. Newer displays show a "ghost" image that will fade once the input
changes. Permanent logo's that are on 24/7 would certainly be an issue over
time. Changing the input during off hours would prevent most of your
problems. Scrolling the text, changing between several images periodically,
turning off static borders and logo's periodically will prevent burn-in.
With a little care and feeding this is not the issue it once was.

We just purchased a large Plasma Display for an announcement/welcome board
in our lobby. I wasn't aware of this but these units develop screen burn in
very quickly. There are warnings plastered all over the user manual.
Plasma units might not be the best thing to display static information....
Your unit may vary, though...

General question to the group...

Has anyone successfully deployed large format monitors or plasma displays for the Shop Schedule
or even as general information/messaging centers?
My thought is to place these "displays" in our lobbies for welcome/information boards; additionally
the shop supervisors have been requesting them for the floor as visual indicators of the production
schedule, etc. I know the plasma's are pricey at roughly $100/inch. Open to suggestions.

Curiously awaiting feedback.

Actually, your placement scheme is all wrong. You need to deploy your
first and largest plasma display in the Shirley's living room location.

Actually, I deployed one to my living room. A name brand 42" commercial
plasma display (roughly 800 x 600 resolution or enhanced definition TV)
would cost about $3,000 purchased over the internet. This is overkill for
your use if you are more interested in using the display as signage. A true
high definition display capable of displaying a HDTV signal would be much
more and be way overkill.

Commercial displays for info where TV like pictures are not required would
be less than the figure I quoted. Contact me direct if you want, I can
point you to several forums where the "experts" will bury you in opinions in
addition to some very good technical information.

As for a welcome/information board, the easiest solution would be to design
a Power Point presentation and just loop through the pages and restart it
when ended. If you wanted more dynamic, you can run a web browser in kiosk
mode. Call up ASP web pages and have them automatically refresh every
minute or so pulling in the new data. Or you can go full blown and develop
your own applications to display and update data. Another suggestion for
displays is to use standard TV's, but resolution is limited.

I haven't worked with the large displays (not cost efficient). At work I've
created several web pages that update themselves every 5 minutes and was
displaying them on a small 15" flat panel monitor outside my office. At
home I send Caller ID and other message information to internet appliances
through out my house.

We've been burning up $350 Lamps in our Projection Displays for 5 years now ;)
The Epson Powerlites have we currently range in price from $1000-$4000. Gateway just quoted me a 42" Plasma
with wall mounts and tuner for $4200, which puts them inline with the Projector pricing. The other problem
with projecting the displays around the shop can best be described by the old adage from when I worked with
Lasers... "NEVER STARE INTO THE BEAM WITH YOUR REMAINING GOOD EYE!"
Granted to Plasmas are overkill but the idea is to have an airport type "arrival-departure" view of
scheduled jobs-assemblies-operations for the areas of the shop that do not have individual Data Collection
boxes or regular Vantage at the employees immediate workcenter like our CNC or CAD employees have.

I guess what I was really asking is if anyone had a comparable solution for displaying Vantage Schedule data,
Weblog/Blogger message board sharing the display with corporate video loops or slide shows; centrally managed.

Cheers

The last time I checked Gateway was rebranding a low end plasma. I would
shop around some if you decide to take this route. Dell and many others
sell name brand plasma displays for the same or lower prices. In the 42"
size the commercial displays from Pioneer and Panasonic run about $3,000.
The commercial displays lack tuners and speakers although some of them have
amps built-in. Consumer displays usually incorporate both for the "take it
out of the box and plug it in TV experience." Depending on how you generate
a signal, a built in tuner may not be necessary. Commercial displays
usually have longer warranties and more choices of inputs (component,
composite, S-video, etc).

A company specializing in AV displays and signage could answer your
questions better than I can. I found several when researching plasma
displays on the net. Sounds like fun, wish I had that kind of budget for
displays in the office.

Hi Group

Plasma Screens are not the best technology to use. A large sized TFT would be alot better.

Plasma screens will be lucky to last five years if used regularly, but TFT's have replacable parts and last alot longer
