I used to get decks of cards and draw designs… One BIG trick with cards was to draw a diagonal line across the card deck… then if you dropped them, or if something was out of order, you could see the staggered line. sounds silly, but it worked, even with a full box (18" of cards). Also allowed you to see inserted cards.

I remember doing that when I was in high school! I also worked in the office and ran the mimeograph machine…ah the lovely smell! The chemicals were probably not good for the brain though.
