Dan,
them. You can choose which one you want to use at login. On my laptop
now, I have KDE, Gnome, Fluxbox, IceWM, and Windowmaker and have used
all of them from time to time. To change which GUI you wish to use,
there should be a "Sessions" pull down or button on the login screen.
I am personally a huge fan of Fluxbox (www.fluxbox.org). It is not as
full-featured as a KDE or Gnome, but it is very fast on any
hardware...and it does everything *I* need a window manager to do.
Total installation size for the latest build is around 600 KB.

show up before the graphical one? If it is just briefly flashing then,
yes, that is normal. There is always an underlying command line login
on the first few virtual consoles. You can always see them by pressing
Crtl + Alt + F1, Crtl + Alt + F2, Crtl + Alt + F3, etc. Your XWindows
session is likely on Crtl + Alt + F7.
BTW, if seeing the text login bugs you, you can actually make XWindows
load a little sooner in your startup.
login screen. From the console, unless you are looking to schedule the
reboot, just type "halt" to shut the system down or "reboot" to reboot.
You can also just give it the old three finger salute (Ctrl + Alt + Del)
which is mapped to execute the "reboot" command. BTW, if you are ever
in the GUI and you want to restart just the GUI, use Ctrl + Alt +
Backspace.
