Printing Attachments

Let me know if it will dynamically change the OLE object, last time i
tried,

It kept the OLE object independent of the formula changing, but images
worked correctly.

Actually - I was able to insert a picture and an OLE object.

Both have access to the formula button which I was able to edit to
reference a fixed string.

My next attempt is to concatenate a string from various data fields.

I'm using Crystal 11 with Vantage 800.405A.

We would like to link our PDF material spec and/or drawing to the Purchased Part Revision and then every time a Crystal Report Purchase Order is printed the material spec would print as well.

Does anyone know if there is a way to do this? We are currently in 6.1 and will be moving to 8.03 soon.

Have you investigated Doc Link? It's a third party advanced print
management solution sold by Epicor. Im not necessarily endorsing it, I
just know it has some capabilities along those lines. We do have it but
its very under utilized here. We do a very similar scenario here with
our work orders, when the job travelers print it also collates the
drawings with them as well as overlaying job information on the print
itself..but that's a third party solution as well...

I hate to rain on your parade but we have DocLink and it will not print
out the attachments in the way you are describing.

The attachment must be sent to the doclink product from Vantage as part
of the Crystal Reports PO print. Vantage doesn't support this.

DocLink can only add attachments to a drawing on the fly if the document
exist in doclink.

For example: we would like to be able to attach an engineering drawing
to each PO but we would have to first copy every released engineering
drawing into the doclink database so that it would be available in case
it was needed when someone printed.

I heard a rumor that Altec may enhance this in a future revision but
that's a pipe dream in the here and now.

The only other option I could think of which I wasn't able to make work
was to add a page to the Crystal template. This would do its own lookup
and embed the drawing as an extra page of the PO.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for letting me know.

I'm surprised to learn there still doesn't seem to be a good way of handling this. Most manufacturing companies have material specs and I truly thought we were one of the few who couldn't come up with a relatively efficient process. No matter what we've tried it's cumbersome at best.

I'm wondering if you can write a client customization that would invoke the shell "Print" dialog for each file in the list of attachments.

This is probably non-trivial.

It can be very useful in supporting process automation like fax and e-mail delivery of invoices to customers, purchase orders to suppliers, and so on.

Because that effective sales person wasn't versed with a technical
background in whatever modules he/she was selling. So unless you
specifically spelled out a deliverable in your purchased agreement for a
particular module you are hosed. We got into this trouble with APM and
our expectations of what it could do as well as several other
capabilities we were 'sold' on but weren't deliverable because of poor
engineering combined with slick selling tactics.

Rob,

That's pretty harsh. Most companies that use APM - from my experience - use it to process invoices, purchase orders, sales orders, quotes, etc. Companies that do hundreds of invoices, POs or SOAs on a daily basis really appreciate the benefits that APM brings to the table by automating the process either faxing, emailing, printing or all of the above. APM is a good product, does it need improvements, yes - but tell me one software product that doesn't?

I do agree with Jason, APM does have some good functionality. I don't
remember what the standard cost for that particular module is. Each
company has to weigh the perceived value vs the cost. We do make use of
what APM has to offer from its core functionality. However, that being
said, I know that Epicor sales folks have tried to sell APM for some
functionality that it really doesn't have (implied or otherwise) to more
than one company out there.

I'm hoping that no one thought I was trashing the product outright. I
was pointing out the limitations that exist as they pertain to
attachments.

We use the product to capture documents and fax them out very
successfully. In fact, we are now in the position to phase out our fax
server which was serving as the defacto archive.

The loose coupling of this product with Vantage is also a benefit
enabling much easier upgrade activity on either DocLink or Vantage.

Stephen - Could you elaborate on modifying a Crystal template to include
dynamic images? I've done some initial exploration but came up empty
handed. Thanks.

John,

Add within a section of your report a Picture object.

Right click format graphic

Choose the Picture tab

You will see the graphic location has a blue formula
button.

You can hence base this image from a record passed
through from your dataset, it needs to be a path accessible to all.

You can also have multiple images / multiple rows in
your dataset.

All you need to do is conform to a format for the image
and size that works like JPEG.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Stephen

Stephen....do you know if this example would work in 6.1 as well as 8.03...(with Crystal 8.5 as well as...what is it now, 11?)

I don't think crystal 8.5 has the ability to have a formula defined
image, I cannot check at the moment but from memory it was introduced
after.

We were very specific and still got hosed.

They simply lied (and not just about APM) to make the sale.

And why should we HAVE to do that after laying out up front purchase
cost for the add on applications, the ongoing annual support costs, and
invested the time to use them - only to find they don't work AT
ALL?!?!?!

I'm wondering if you can write a client customization that would invoke
the shell "Print" dialog for each file in the list of attachments.

This is probably non-trivial.

When I get ripped off I get harsh - and we did get ripped off.

I'm happy it serves your needs.

It is not fullfilling the deliverables that we specifically asked about and were assured it would.

Our IT staff is second to none (and I've worked with many) so this isn't some misunderstanding.

We simply got hosed and they have to earn our trust back (and aren't doing a stellar job of it on other similar issues).

I've used many different products in 25 years and this is by far the buggiest, lowest ROI one I've experienced.

I hope that changes as we're heavily invested.

If it doesn't, they will have one less customer in a few years.

Words won't change our reality.

Bravo John! (And thanks - You saved me from typing a long rant on what a useless bill of goods Epicor is selling companies under the APM "& extras" ad nauseum umbrella of optional (added cost) modules.)

They're not worth the paper Epicor's literature on them is printed on.
