I´m at the beginning of an implementation in a Printing Company, they don´t have final products to sell, the sell is over orders on request, so we don´t have always the same products. Mainly is offset printing… Does anyone here have an Idea of how we can handle the Engineering?
Find common aspects to the various print jobs (materials, inks, machines run on, etc…) and make a generic part that uses those types of parts, operations and resources.
I’ve no printing experience, so forgive the crude analogy…
Say you commonly print flyers, and they can various combinations of:
B&W, CMYK, single color, etc…
Printed on continuous feed paper (rolls), or single sheets
Post processing: unfolded, single fold, c-fold, z-fold…
You could make a BOM for jobs that print 4 colors on individual sheets, and are z-folded. Then use that as a template for any job close to that, and just change out inks, or papers as needed. I’d probably focus on making them so that I didn’t have to change the operations.
