Printing issue Vantage 6.1

We have it so often, one of our users has a routine. She comes in the
morning, prints what needs to be printed, logs out, logs back in, and
cleans the vantage client directory. She feels after this piece of
Voodoo, she has no more problems with it for the rest of the day.

Aaron & Julie,

I've fought that battle for nearly 2 years! But it's only on 2
workstations. We've rebuilt and even replaced the hardware... Tried
numerous combinations of PS and PCL drivers for several different
printers as well as Acrobat 6 & 7... But it keeps blowing up the Vantage
session about every third print attempt. The last time was after a
workstation replacement: new PC with WinXP SP2 (previous attempts with
Win2000 and XPSP1 failed). Only the OS and Vantage 6.1 installed with a
fresh install of Acrobat 6 (later 7)... no AV or any other programs and
it would still blow up!

So please if anyone has found the cure for this curse... Share it!

Thanks, Lee

Question time group,

Does anyone have a solution yet to the combination of XP and Vantage 6.1
printing and suddenly just dumping Vantage. It is so intermittent that I
can't seem to tie it down yet. I have it happening on several computers.
It is unrelated to the printer (even happens to PDFFactory sometimes).
Anyone figure this out yet or am I the only one annoyed by this?

Thanks,

Aaron:
I have really been having alot of those problems lately here. Seems like it goes great for a long time and then every time a user prints certain things, it
crashes. I haven't been able to figure it out either! I did just change out a printer for the A/P person and now she's having more problems than she used to, but I also have 2 production people that use the same printer and one has lock-ups all the time and the other almost never does. I too would
like to hear if anyone has figured this out!

I will see that sometimes as well. I wonder if it has anything to do with
the Microsoft patches that they release. It seems like the printing will be
temperamental with each patch that I install on that computer. A couple of
months ago It would do it a lot when I would print from my PC to another
printer on a different PC, but it stopped when I installed a new set of
patches.

We had a problem a while back but we were getting a 545c error, I
believe it was. It turned out that our server that the printers were
running through, the hard drives were nearly full. When we cleaned
those up we no longer had the problem.

We have seen this numerous times as well. What we found works is to
replace any of the drivers with PS drivers - PCL drivers are bad and
seem to cause a lot of problems. Also, you can try a generic print
driver to see if that helps your issue. For example, if you are using an
HP 4000 series, you might try an HP 4 driver to see if this helps your
issue.

What helped some of our printing issues was to set the default printer
to where you wanted to print and then launch Vantage. Seems changing
printers mid-stream was not liked by the system.

We have this problem also. Is it only affecting reports created in
Crystal? We also have problems when we do a check run and print a
100+ checks at once. It sometimes takes us up to 3 tries on the
checks and that is a Crystal report.

Good point Dan. Yes, I'd have to say it's probably exclusively the
Crystal Forms - Sales Orders, Purchase Orders, AR Invoice...

Please see attached. I tried all steps, but the printing problem didn't stop
until I did step 12. Try to install Crystal Reports to the problem
workstation. Then uninstall, but leave the dll files.

Summary: CR Troubleshooting Print Problems in VN 6.x
Book: Support Solutions
Page: 5248MPS

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: From time to time, there may be problems printing
Crystal Report forms from within version 6.x.

XA610
XA600

Problems may include one or more of the following:

1. User prints a report from within V6.
2. V6 passed the report to the printer and returns.
3. No printout occurs.
4. No error occurs from within V6.
5. V6 will crash after a print request, forcing the user to log in again.

Here are some suggestions for troubleshooting a printing problem with Crystal Reports 8.x and version 6.x.

PROBLEM RESOLUTION:
1. Make sure that any virus protection software is NOT actively scanning the mapped drive to V6 or the local working directory.

2. Reboot client machine, and try printing again. Often, any communications problems will be reset by a reboot of the client machine.

3. Try printing from another machine to the same printer. There may be a communications problem on the client PC in question.

4. Rename printers using 8 characters or less with no spaces or special characters. There may be problems resolving any characters beyond 8. There may also be problems with non-alphanumeric characters.

5. Is the form modified? If it is, does the standard form print without an error? Choose that style (default is Report Style 1) from System
Management->Configuration Maintenance->Report Style Maintenance. Print
Management->to
white paper on the problem printer.

6. Does the Progress form print? Choose that style (usually Report Style
2) from System Management->Configuration Maintenance->Report Style Maintenance. Print to white paper on the problem printer. NOTE: Some forms do not have a Progress form.

7. Logout of V6, and empty the local working directory (C:\epicor\mfgwrk61, by default). Sometimes the temporary files become corrupt and must be created from scratch.

8. Check the Windows permissions on the local working directory. They should be full control for everyone.

9. Logout of V6. Set the desired printer to the Windows Default printer.
Login to V6, and try printing the report again.

10. Do a search on the problem workstation for: msvcp60.dll, p2sodbc.dll, and p2bxbse.dll. Check the version of each of these files and compare it to the version of the files in the \MfgSys61\dll folder. If the versions differ, rename the files on the workstation and copy the files from the \MfgSys61\dll folder.

11. There may be a problems registering Progress files on the V6 server.
These files have the .OCX extension, and are in the \mfgsys61\ocx folder.
In that folder, there is a file INSTOCX.EXE that will force the registry of these files. Run it on the client having a problem.

12. Try to install Crystal Reports to the problem workstation. Then uninstall, but leave the dll files.

Lee,
Agreed, it is exclusive to Crystal, but...As for the printer drivers or
default printers others have brought up, I have gone that route. It will
happen even if the drivers are a HP LJ IIP and even if you are only doing a
preview in Vantage, not even getting to the print drivers. This seems to be
related more to something before the printer. I wish I could say just what,
but again the answer eludes me.
It is restricted to just a few workstations...and are you ready for the real
strange part...One user had the problem, we replaced the computer with a new
one and the problem followed, another user did not have the problem but got
a new computer and the problem started. But the other 4 computers installed
between the two do not exhibit the issue at all.
It's so frustrating to connect the dots when the numbers are missing.

Thanks for the responses so far, I really hope someone has or does solve
this soon.

I just had this happen today and think that it is fixed.

Older XP box (SP1 original), we just installed SP2 and problems
printing started. User gets dumped, long delays, etc.

Fixes we tried:
1. Rebooted machine (didn't work)
2. Empty the mfgwk61 folder. (didn't work)
3. Remove printer from system and removed all drivers using Printers
and Faxes, file, server properties, drivers, remove. Reinstalled same
driver as before and problem is gone. Coincidence? Maybe.

Tech support has a doc that details how to check the dll's between the
server and the workstations. You need to make sure they match. You also
need to dump the Mfgwrk61 directory. We use a login script to create mapped
drives, it also contains a delete command to clean out the Mfgwrk61
directory. This happens every time the pc is booted. We also reboot after
every invoice or picking slip run. After doing all of this and playing with
it for years it is much better. It still crashes, just not as much.

You can make it better but you can't fix it or so I was told. It's a bug
that Epicor can't fix without support from the other vendors and that isn't
going to happen. They (Crystal, MS, Progress, whoever) fixed their part in
newer releases that Vantage doesn't support. The problem doesn't exist in
the 8.0 releases and nobody is going to go back and fix an old release.

Sincerely,

Mitchell Kirby

We are using Windows XP and running Vantage 6.1. We have had an ongoing
problem with printing since our last patch installation. While trying to
print a batch of AP checks, the system hangs up, and then boots you out
of Vantage. I found that there was a problem with our database
connection. It gets changed sometimes when our network administrator has
been doing things in the system. I have talked to support a few times,
and was told that it was a problem with Windows. Our solution was to
open the report in Crystal and run the Verify Database feature. This has
solved the problem.

Has anyone noticed a correlation where the printing errors occur on workstations that where upgraded from previous versions of the Vantage client?

On the ones that showed this problem, the only way I was able to get rid of it was a ground up reload of the OS and installing only the 6.1 client.
